@Smitty335,
I assume this is you needing this work. What did you do to require this?
I have not heard of many people outside the Honda boat group needing such work.
I'd say they are pretty reliable and if if your rings are fired, then you most likely need to replace other bearings while you are in there.
Yes & change oil & air filters. It's fried. Some mechanics have told me the 16's could have the oil rings installed upside down from the factory? You remember me catching a ride with you on the MOM Overland, this is why, pumping oil.

At that price I'd just buy a crate engine if that's truly the issue but I have my doubts. Unless it sucked dirt or water/mud there's no way the rings are smoked with that kind of mileage.

If you're looking to unload it cheap PM me ;)
Thinking boating accident! HA!

So you saying its blowing oil smoke out the muffler?

You may be the first to have this happen for no known reason.
And I don't recall any comments about rings being upside down.
Could be? I wish I would have traded it off two years ago when I first noticed something wasn't right at 3,200 miles. And not known what was wrong with it.

Ow well I don't get along with Fords or Dodges either, never buy another one of them either.

It's an unfortunate situation and not very common with either Honda or Yamaha.

6 or 7 thousand to repair sounds ridiculous, but if that's the only option, it's time to move on to another buggy.

Post it up here for best offer and let one of the brotheren here, that is capable to do the repair enjoy it, and move on.

Is it actually smoking while running or is it just losing oil?
No smoke, bore scope revealed carbon despots on top of #1 piston. That's the piston closest to the front.

I'm sorry you got a lemmon. If mines every starts smoking it sounds like it's time to go. They just made things to complexed these days. There really was no since in it either. You could rebuild an old car or truck back in the day in you buddies garage and get everything at the junk yard or the parts store down the road and be driving it the next week to work again. Now you have to sell a kidney fix a side x side. Just read where Toyota is going back in time. Their building a $10.000 truck. You can't buy in the US.

I was curious what the manual said and it looks the piston and rod come out as an assembly. No longer separate cylinder and case like the old days. I'm guessing that is the case for all years though and not just the '16s. I'm sorry for your situation.

As a lifetime member I just got it from Resources tab up above. Not that it will help much, because I'm sure it will be still bad news. May just want to wait for the paper copy so you can have a good Thanksgiving. Best wishes.

Well my P1 has been at the shop for two months, which is fine by me. I don't have to walk by it and get disgusted every time I'm in my shop. Did call, intake valves very wallowed out. New head is on the way. At 4,560 miles. I recommend never buying anything first year out.

Sorry about your bad luck. Did they say what caused it to wallow out? Must be bad if they couldn't replace the valve guide and seat. 🤔
