When I was fairly young, my father and his buddy took me backpacking all over the country and up into western Canada. Many of the places we hiked into had just built brand new Outhouses. All of them were made of Cedar and no matter how bad the freeze dried food we ate was, it always smelled amazing inside. I asked a ranger why they made them from cedar and not some cheaper plywood. His response was, " because all of the Porcupines eat the glue from the veneers of the plywood". I then understood why the outhouse roof was half eaten. I don't know how those critters got up there, but it didn't stop us from enjoying those Solid Cedar s***ters.-- True story.
It did remind me of this not so true story;

Great book! I have a 1st printing.

My dad moved us into a hunting cabin when I was 16, 40 acres right on the river. No running water or electricity, gas lights, wood heat, hand well and yes an outhouse. Lots of stories. We eventually acquired all of the amenities, through a lot of hard work but I know first hand what it's like to use an outhouse regularly. Gets pretty damn cold in N. Michigan in Jan., you only go when you HAVE to go. Anyway, we never scooped them out, we just dug another deep hole and moved the shack. ;)

We were high society when I was a kid. We had a toilet in the house. No tub or shower so we would have to go out to the barn where there was a hose that we could screw a shower head into to get clean. My grandparents had a "three holer" though. In the winter it seemed like it was at least a mile away from their house when I had to go in the middle of the night.

I always have figured that............

if you can't take a leak off your back porch.......... then the neighbors are way to close!

Personally I think you ought to be able to stick the barrel of the 300 Win Mag out any door or window and let a few rip and not have to worry about hitting anybody
