I had actually thought about a small Ham Radio, if you stay off of certain frequencies supposedly you can use it.

2 Pack Baofeng UV-5RTP Tri-Power 8/4/1W Two-Way Radio Transceiver (UV-5R Upgraded Version with Tri-Power), Dual Band 136-174/400-520MHz True 8W High Power Two-Way Radio + 1 Programming Cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T62A1TI/?tag=sxsweb24-20

i am not sure about hand held ham radios but I believe there is a government license you must obtain to run a ham radio.

Do they have better range than other radios if they are not on the "licensed bands"

Not sure I know you have to be on a certain frequency range to run the 8w output(on these radios, budget was my reason for the brand). I have not looked into it deep enough to answer the range question hopefully someone else can.

That is one of those things I have some interest in but really know nothing about. I know my "32 mile" rated radios we use for hunting have a range of about a ½ mile here in WV......
