What type of communication gear do you use on trail rides with a group. The misses and I have and use Baofeng UV5R radios most of the time. Very cheap radios, not a Yaesu or ICOM but do the job. Baofeng=Rugged Radio Style radios. FRS, GMRS ETC.

The Beofang hand helds are a great starter radio. There are a LOT of members here that use the same radio. The tyt8600 is one of the best mobile radios out there.

Thanks for the info. I run a Yaesu FT2980 in the jeep and Toyota. Looks like the TYT8600 is a viable option for permanent installation. 😀 I'm just looking for something quick and easily removable at the moment. I'll mount the Folded Metal mount on the ROPS. I'll try running a Nagoya NA771 antenna with BNC mount and see how it works.

Looks like you are well equipped. Also have two Baofeng handhelds and a TYT 8600 attached to a Honda ROPS clamp for easy removal. Made an extra power pigtail for the TYT for moving it to the truck using a 9005 headlight plug. (Ham tech lic).

We use Motorola DTR 550 and 650 radios. The new model is the DTR 700. They are 900mhz UHF full digital radios that are secure due to having frequency hopping technology similar to military radios. Being digital, the transmissions are always crystal clear if the radios are in range of each other, no static ever. The radio will beep to let you know if you are not in range, otherwise perfectly clear transmissions every time. Battery is really great too.

People will say that these are UHF and won't work as well as VHF radios in the woods. I'm always surprised how well these work and the distances I have gotten with these radios in woody and hilly terrain.

Alright got the mount delivered and the Baofeng UV5R radio installed. It came out pretty cool. With the Nagoya NA-771 mounted as in the pics I was able to hit a local repeater about 10 miles away from the garage. This will work for the trails. A KeyBak holds the mic outta the way until needed. Not permanent but will look at those options also. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. 73. Update. Rerouted the Mic/Speaker cable and tie-wrapped so now it always faces the driver and passenger. ;) Will work on antenna positioning.
