Nice work! We are on the list from the state for a UTV. They are government surplus, nothing like that. The first one they offered was a 2wd mule. We declined as we need a 4x4 for the mud we see during fire season. Hoping something decent roles around. I'd like to buy one that would be ours, but not in the card.

This is our rescue truck just above the extrication equipment. The truck is an 07 with 8000 miles on it. The box is from 1974. A new box is 70,200 not including any lighting or removing the old box and mounting a new one. I have duct tape over it till we figure out what we are gonna do.View attachment 418902there is no excuse that any US fire ,police, should be using equipment like that, shame on the state/ feds

Final monitor is installed. Our rescue truck had another hole pop up. Gorilla tape to the rescue.

Having to patch holes with tape sucks. Not sure how long that gorilla tape will hold up but next time get some eternabond tape. It’s made for RV roofs. It will stick to about anything and lasts a very long time. It has done very well on my camper roof. Comes in different widths and lengths

I am hoping we are going to get rid of this truck after wildland season.

What if I told you its not even the worst truck in the fleet? The far right brush truck in the above picture broke down twice and caught fire once last year. The year before we had a transmission cooler issue and was down a week during our fire season.

Our 1990 tender has no working gauges, air pressure takes 8-10 minutes to build, tank has a slight leak, no direct fill into the tank, no air conditioning, and sketchy wiring. Sometimes the transmission wont shift. It was a dump truck before it was converted for firefighting in 2003. FEMA told me I was close to getting a new one last go around just wasn't quite old enough when it came time to pass out money. They cut the budget to the Assistance to Firefighter's Grant by $32.4 million this year, and I expect next year it will get even smaller. Vehicle grants are so competitive you have a roughly 2% chance of pulling one.

Kansas Forest Service got a UTV for us. 2004 Kubota Diesel. It's very muddy right now so we need to get it in service. Going to get it Friday. Basically it is government surplus. They permanently loan it to us. We equip it for firefighting and maintain it. When we are done with it, we give it back. One day we hope to be able to afford a Pioneer, Gator, Ranger, etc but we can't afford to turn this down. Pretty excited.

We picked it up Friday. There was a Kubota dealer nearby so we got all the fluids/filters to get her up and running. We got back about 1800 and by 2000 we had it going. She isn't a speed demon, but the cab is in good shape (minus some floor rot). She runs strong and the heat and ac work which wasn't expected. We have it set up to fight fire already, and a member is working on fixing the floor.

We had our superbowl Friday. Wind whipped grass fire with multiple structures threatened. We lost some structures and saved many more. No primary residence were lost. The fire was running so fast it went around a some houses. The fire ran 5 miles. Our trucks and volunteers are worn out. We have 2 out of service but hope to get them going today.

If anybody is in Eastern KS we are selling raffle tickets to try and get some funding together to upgrade equipment.

Red flag warning again tomorrow. Lots of prescribed fire today, which makes me nervous for a rekindle. We cleaned air filters, checked fluids, made repairs, ensured they had their hand tools, washed them, etc. today.

Do we have to be local to join the raffle? Or can we send Paypal/Zelle etc?

That's a great question. I can ask. We are doing a Henry Golden Boy in .22 lr from a local FFL who is also a firefighter. Not sure if they would want to ship to your FFL or just want to keep it local. This is our first fundraiser.

One thing I was adamantly against in our fire district was a big heavy brush truck. However my mind has been changed. We need something that carries more water than our 200-300 gals on our brush trucks. Neighboring department arrived with their 5 ton and it was a firefighting machine. Surplus through our forest service is defunct, and we are looking at close to 50k to get the truck, then you still have to equip it.

Hopefully the last one of the spring burn season. After the flurry on 3/14 people minded their Ps and Qs for the most part. We had a few small fires. This one yesterday was probably 15-20 acres.

We had a "Spirited" conversation with our fire board at the monthly meeting. They don't see the problem driving truck with 25 yr old steer tires that doesn't have working gauges. Or 24 yr old SCBAs that wouldn't be allowed to remain in service in some states (and that failed on me in a house fire). Or brush trucks that are burning coolant. Or that we are buying batteries for one of our cardiac monitors on ebay because it is so old.

We have a meeting with an attorney on our 501c3 this afternoon. We also got notified yesterday we were awarded a grant for canned drinking water. Anheuser-Busch Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters

Kind of late to this thread. I use these screw on magnets to attach lights to my tender. They are strong but you can still move the lights around to any steel surface as needed. Something like hitting a large branch will move them but hitting a large branch with bolted on lights will break them anyway.

Magnets

Great to see very active VFD's. I was a VFD member for a long time but around here they have mostly disappeared for various reasons. Population growth and new residents just were not interested in supporting a VFD. We now have paid firefighters but our neighborhood was much better protected when we had a local VFD.

I'd bet they'd change their s***ty attitudes if it failed on the way to a fire at their house.

f***ing idiots, we send all this money overseas to ungrateful people and this s*** is happening in our back yards.

They want us to quit pump testing because "everytime we pump test a truck it requires repairs". This year was no different. The thermostat failed closed on one engine and it overheated. We said the purpose is to find problems before we have people in a house and the truck does that. Just FYI run away from a detroit 40 series motor. Our chief flat told them as long as I am still chief we will pump test yearly. They budget $6k a year for vehicle repair. We haven't made that in 4 years and last year we spent $19,919.08 on repairs.

Its frustrating. it feels like we are standing there looking up at a 100 ft tall wall. The mill levy drops each year to keep us "revenue neutral but all our expenses are growing rapidly. Its like watching a noose tighten.

I don’t know how your FD is organized…but it sounds like your dept is separate from the city your hall resides in.

I was a volly and wildland FF. On my VFD, I was the secretary treasurer for several years and I’m quite familiar with your challenges are. Never a chief but truck captain and wildland truck boss.

Our VFD used to operate separate of the city many years ago. They were facing the exact same issues…years of neglect, infighting, old equipment, etc.

Our VFD decided to approach the city in which they reside with a proposal for the City to take over ownership of the equipment and extend insurance coverage to the FFers who would become city employees whom were paid a stipend of $5 per call. and the FD “club” would still run fundraisers, events and the such to purchase equipment together with the city. The club also wrote for grants always. The fire chief became part of the city council.

The club remains a separate entity that operates the equipment..when the tone goes off, they are city employees. The FD gets the benefit of maintained and reliable equipment. The city residents benefit from lower insurance rates as the department has the proper equipment for the fire district. Over the years we systematically updated / replaced equipment. The club bought , built most of the tenders and brush rigs. Never new rigs, but low mile finds that were updated and shined up. Excess funds from the fundraisers are placed into CDs until enough has accumulated to facilitate necessary equipment upgrades (saws, scba, hoses, etc, etc) This was possible as the maintenance was being performed/covered by the city. The old fire engines ultimately were retired and replaced with new conventional conversions. Today, my FD has some of the best equipment and reasonably new turnout gear in the state. They run about 80 calls a year with about 1/2 ems / bandaid buggy.

Something to consider.
