We made it to Spearfish Sunday. Our group grew to 12 people. 2 Talons, 1 Polaris, 2 Can Ams, 1 Rincon, 4 Rubicons. Trailered over 1,400 miles. We got our Wyoming permits online and got the SD permits here easily. Both were $25 a machine. We don’t have license plates so we had to go the the county treasurers office to get a 7 day permit to ride on the roads. $1 a day for each machine. We rode 80 miles Monday and 67 Tuesday. Unfortunately it is in the mid 90’s with dry, very dusty trails which spreads us out pretty far.

is there anywhere you couldn't go if you where in a wider machine (70")?

Today we put in at Pilot Knob trailhead south of Deadwood off of 385 and went on Trail 89, the Centinial 62” trail. You should avoid that area. Some narrow tree gaps, rocks and switchbacks too tight for much more than 64”. Custer Peak and Cement Ridge lookout are two high points you can make easily. Lots of wide fire roads and trails to keep you busy. I’ll post some pics of today’s ride later.

The trail north of Galena is pretty cool IMO. It’s got a pretty good long grade to pull to the top as you leave Galena. Used to be a mining town and has a pretty old cemetery to check out. You can start from the Camp 5 TH if you like too. It’s on the northern hills Ranger map.

Unfortunately at 70” you are going to be limited. Mostly logging roads etc. basically jeep trails.

South Dakota was underwater a very long time ago. Looking for fossilized icthyosaurs?

This is what happens when you unhook your trailer facing downhill in the parking lot and don’t chock your tires. Someone’s White cargo trailer went rolling down the parking lot in the high winds missing 2 trucks then rammed into one of our trailers. 18’ tandem wheel trailer loaded with a Talon and a CanAm 1000 ATV took a big hit. It was unhooked and parked in between the white lines while we were out being tourists. It got turned about 45 degrees but only got a few scratch marks.

Friday another 60 or so miles from trailhead south of Savoy. Wide trails and dirt roads.

Saturday, day 7. Started at Pilot Knob trailhead again but headed south this time. Plenty of good trails in that area. We are about to wrap it up here. No breakdowns and no injuries so it was a good week.

We left Spearfish on Sunday after 11 days in the area. As a group we enjoyed 6 days of all day riding 50-85 miles each day. Most trails were extremely dusty. Respirators, goggles, sunscreen and a lot of water are a must have. If you find a main road food and fuel are available but we brought both with us. Everyone we met was friendly, local or tourist like us, just out having a good time. We had 1 cool morning then got mostly 90+ degree afternoons in the sun. Lots of scenery to see even when not riding. Drove through some beautiful areas on the way out of town. I towed my trailer through a lot of narrow one lane rock tunnels without a scratch luckily. We checked this area off of our to do list so it’s off to Meeker and wherever in Colorado area for a few days before heading home. Only three of us making that trip.
