A dirty, worn-out, or water soaked air filter will allow for more impurities to pass through it and into the engine. Checking it and keeping it clean is something that should be done before the start of any trip. Honda has made it easy on the Pioneer to access and check the air filter.

To check the filter on the Pioneer.
- Locate the filter under the rear bed, it is centered and can be easily seen on the 700-2. The 700-4 requires the removal of the rear center cover located between the rear foot rest. It can be easily popped off to view the air box.
- Next remove the retainer clips holding the box lid closed, there are 6 of them. Inside you will see the filter.
- Loosen the screw clamp holding the cleaner in place. Remove the clamp.
- Remove the air cleaner body from inside the filter.
- Wash the filter gently with a high flash point solvent such as Kerosene. Thought gas works well too it is not recommended. Gently squeeze the remaining solvent out of the foam filter. Try to refrain from twisting as this can cause it to tear.
- Inspect the filter for cracks or tears, replace as needed.
- Allow the filter to dry.
- Clean the air box as needed.
- Clean the drain tube as needed.
- Once the filter is dry. Pour Honda foam filter oil or equivalent over the outside surface of the filter. Use hands to spread evenly around the outside of the filter.
- Reassemble filter assembly in the reverse order of removal.
