Pull the skid plates off.
Drain the engine oil. Inspect oil filter housing for debris.
If sand/silt etc found, remove lower oil pan and clean out what you find.
These engines are robust. I had one in my shop that sucked fine sand from Michigan down it's throat. It had some cyl wall scoring.
I was working on the subtrans for the owner. I did end up changing the oil, cleaning oil pan etc.
Owner ended up trading it in not long after.

You able to check compression for giggles ?

Does it smoke, burn oil?

tbh - I must ask if there is more to the story that you are aware of? , if the trhrottle body clamps were loose, boots not on correct - that’s been apart before imo - if that’s where it was sucking dirt in - I’m kinda scratching my head why the velocity stacks are dirty if it was sucking dirt below

Interesting
There were several of this failure 'back then', it's definitely a Honda problem but it's unlikely that they'll do anything about it.

About dirt traveling backward up the velocity stacks - it's common and caused by valve overlap at some RPM.

Good to know about the dust going back up - thanks

Unfortunately, that's going to be an expensive rebuild that's going to involve a new block or custom sleeves.

Did all the drop in engines/sub trans get sold off?
That is the route I would go, or fix it enough to run and trade it off.

If the timing chain tensioner fixes the immediate issue, I'm betting he's just going to run with it until it blows. I'll update the title as the engine isn't actually blown but seriously suspect.

The tensioner is self adjusting. What's there to mess with?
The way I found out my tensioner went bad when I was having idle issues and it sounded bad while running was pulling the bolt and pushing in on the tensioner screw. It would push in some putting more pressure on it and our Talon would instantly quiet up and idle right. That was on our 37,000 mile Talon. It’s a long shot for him but something to check at least in his process of diagnosing it.

can we get the compression tester out ?
With the amount of dirt in that intake tube, it doesn't much matter other than mechanical curiosity, the engine's rear cylinder is trashed.

curiosity for the most part - it still runs so just data for the memory bank

here’s how dumb I am - bought a cr125 not too long ago - knew it didn’t run as owner said bump start only - i was planning for a sleeve/new piston - threw the compression tester on anyway - 60#’s - well that sucks

went to drain coolant - no coolant - bummer
pulled head - no head gasket - bummer
pulled cylinder - ring stuck in piston - bummer

how it made 60#’s was “interesting”

Well, that flashes me back almost 50 years ...

My car wouldn't start unless I got a push start. Took it to 'my' mechanic and described the problem - won't start unless I get a push. 😢

Mechanic didn't blink - low compression, needs a valve job. Now I was a 17 yo kid and the last thing I wanted to do was pull the heads on my car.

But ... I did ... and he was right, the thing fired right up when I put it back together. 😱

The oil next to those threads and amount of dirt in the "dirty" side of the airbox makes me think the filter was clogged and started sucking oil from the valve cover vent.

Then possibly the air filter/seal failed and sucked that dirt into the air horn.

Doesn't explain the clamps.
