Since the topic of Ham radio came up on another thread I was wondering how many people we have with their Amateur Radio License.

I am a General class having passed my tech exam in 1991 while studying electronics - teacher was a Ham and since this was before cell phones a bunch of us in class went and got licensed. I passed my general exam about 9 years ago or so maybe 8. It is one of those hobbies that I am more active in waves.

KL4II. Tech, but will be general and maybe extra by the end of January. I took the general immediately after passing the tech and missed it by about 15. Since studying for the general I've found that there's antenna stuff I need to brush up on. For this test I want to understand the question and the answer. The tech test was easy, but I do have an electronics background.

You don't have Advanced Class listed and there are still a few of us who did not upgrade to Extra at the time that level was dropped.
KC7LB-Advanced. I have been a Ham since 1975.
I knew I was forgetting a class - Just added to the poll

So, basically I've learned by links provided by you guys...
  1. Technician is good, and all we would need for the takeover... VERY LOCAL - Handheld to handheld.
  2. General is better, esp for emergencies (and repeat stations)
  3. Extra is High-power stuff to talk around the world
I'm getting motivated to get at least General.

@Jshell3 basically yes.

Technician is what you would need for trail riding - you can use repeaters to increase distance but mostly local even the. You have access to higher power output than GRS/CB etc

General - gives you privileges on HF - long distance communications without use of repeaters (distance from state to world)

Extra - expands your HF privileges - I like to think of Extra as access to the VIP area of HF - the area you gain access to are less crowed on contest days, special events etc.

Here's a chart that will give you the privileges of all the license classes.

Well, I just had my first legal QSO with another licensed HAM here in this area.
Turns out tonight was a good night to talk, because several HAMs were driving to the local amateur radio chapter's Christmas party...

:D
