So I apologize for being a dummy on this technology but if I was to purchase one of these products would it require a monthly payment to keep the system operating. This is the only reason I haven't given up my paper maps just yet. Im illiterate when it comes to this technology.

I agree! Just ordered a large map and some smaller ones from trail maps look awesome! We need more vendors at takeover!
