Check out this new split windshield Honda just released. Top is fixed and the BOTTOM flips out! Quick and easy to transition from full protection to full air flow to STOP dust by busting the low pressure behind the window. Amazing!

Ha! That's exactly what I did, reverse the brackets, and it works amazing.

In my opinion, the $600 Honda Signature split windshield is the one ill-conceived, poorly designed product. The hardware and windshield themselves are fine, but it's pretty obvious no one at Honda ran one through many off road scenarios.

With the upper windshield open (tipped out), it never had enough ventilation and just invited dust. I added the clear round aircraft vents to the lower and it just still wasn't enough, so...during the summer, I run with the lower panel removed and, viola! no dust and great ventilation. Quite the no brainer.

When we were on our 80 mile'r the other day, the last 10 miles were in on county roads and the wind rushing through at 50 mph was just a freaking PITA...when you're tired and just want to get home. I was thinking what a waste it was to have the lower panel sitting home when it sure would be nice to have it on to break the wind.

Sitting there being blasted by the wind I came up with this modification. Lemme' tell ya, this is the way this windshield should have been designed and released by Honda. All the OEM components and one little stiffener and it's like NIGHT AND DAY!

Great ventilation and NO dust, and flip the OEM cam levers and it's down in seconds to break the wind or protect you from the cold.

You have to be careful and drill extra holes but I filled the original holes with black push plugs. I used some shorter m6 bolts in place of long ones just to make it clean but other than that, there is NO cutting or modifying the plastic windscreen. If one did not like the final product, you can simply revert back to the original design.

I did make a little stiffener for the center that attaches to the OEM bracket to give everything a bit more integrity. I anyone needs a picture I can post one.

Anyway, for me (and my passengers) it really works great...

@Plongson
Can you confirm there is no upper mount on lower piece?
It looks like it is attached by the swivel bracket only?

No upper mount or hinge on the lower. It just swings open via the brackets with the cam locks. Believe me, it's solid as a rock when open with the little stiffener and just as solid as OEM when closed.

@Plongson, I have this exact set up and love your idea! What did you use to make the stiffener bracket or where did you purchase it from? I am definitely interested in changing my to this set up!
Thank you for your time!

Mike, I fabricated the center support from 1/4"x1" flat aluminium. Used a plastic handle off a small donor ball valve (pulled it off), and painted the bracket with wrinkle paint. The bracket has a slight bend and a 8mm hole and used a plastic knob on a 6m bolt to attach it to the center support on the dash. When the screen is down, the bolt and knob screw back in the same center hole on the lower windscreen to hold it secure.

This should'a been the way this windshield came from Honda...

If you need more or better photos, just let me know.

It's just East vs West. The distances traveled at high speed out here make a windshield a nice commodity. It's still all about personal preference but it's also nice to have during a BOOMER at 10,000 feet when the rain turns to hail and you still have 40 miles to camp before sundown...

Yet lot's of bikers run w/o a windshield or helmets.

ME...I'm an old fool that likes a bit of protection from the elements...just say'n

Thanks for sharing, looks like a great idea! Could you please post a couple close up pictures of the support bracket? I may just give this a try myself.

Awesome, modification. When I sat in @Tigermark P500 and the windshield tilted out from the bottom I said I to him it would be nice if Honda had the 1000 windshield like that.... I always hated the split tilt out as by the end of the day I would be hunched over looking through the split

Here's the bracket. 1/8" x 1 Aluminum with a plastic handle stolen from some other project. Drilled, bent and sprayed wrinkle coat.
I had a bit of a mishap with the 6m screw in the dash bracket, I ended up pushing it out from the back and drilling it out for a press fit 1/4"-20 flange nut...If you can find a knob or thumb screw for a 6m bolt, you won't have to go to all that trouble.

What's cool is, when you put the windshield down, the knob with the bolt goes right back in the OEM hole per the original design and you won't loose it. You have to stash the bracket though...

Sun visors, may be a full fold down windshield in the future? Im so short the sun blinds me at sun rise and sun set, so I came up with these tinted visors, and keeps the cold wind off your face, after seeing your mod thinking about doing a full width fold down, it won't be a water proof as yours, but it would catch most of it. Will need more friction hinges!

Daggum wished I'd thought bout that long time ago... That's a great idea'er u had right there man. Do u have any trouble with the top half of the windshield flexing with the bottom open. I pulled the bottom off mine once but seemed like the top vibrated like crazy. I'm gonna try it regardless just curious if the windflow changes
