P700 New to me 2016 Pioneer 700

After 2 weekends of mainly running around the house, the Pioneer 700 is running good! It's been raining a lot down here in SWLA so I got to try out the 4x4 mode on a pipeline. On the road it seems to be most comfortable cruising 28-30 mph.

It still doesn't start like a typical Honda though. Seems to turn over more than I was always used to. Fuel mixture seems a little rich too.

A few things I still need to fix are:
  • Brakes. They work but not very well. I would not take this to Arkansas mountains as is. Probably will go with all new calipers.
  • Axle boots are dry and cracking and will need replacement.
  • Engine to rear diff drive shaft boot is split and will need replacement.
I've spent a good bit of change to get to this point. Then engine feels solid and transmission shift consistently. It's not a speed demon but for around the house and casual trail riding it should be fine.

If I were buying a new machine, I wouldn't go out and buy a 700 for what we do. The 1000 is much more capable of doing slow to fast in everything.
My 23 likes 28-30 mph also. 700's will get you there.

If I were buying a new machine, I wouldn't go out and buy a 700 for what we do. The 1000 is much more capable of doing slow to fast in everything.

If I had to do it again, I would buy the 700 all over. It's the perfect size for a lot of the trails we do in the Obed, and the 1000 would just be way too wide for some of that and definitely too wide for my trailer. That extra couple inches is all the difference between clearance and a detour on our TN property.

Finally took the wife for a short rider on the hunting lease yesterday. It's been raining so much down here over the last 2 weeks, we can't ride many places. Even the hunting lease was bad. But I did get to try out the 4WD and Diff-Lock modes, which do work. The 700 is running very well now! Still a little difficult to start sometimes but other than that it's running great. I can see where this would be a great hunting rig. It has been super handy picking up downed limbs from the storms that passed through in the last 2 weeks.

Well, the Pioneer was doing great then yesterday on the road to my dad's place the machine dropped itself into what seemed like 1st gear out of the blue. The engine rev'd high as I coasted from about 30 to 15 mph. Then it seemed to catch a gear and continue on. I decided to stop at a driveway to get off the road and that was it. It hasn't gone forward or backward since. It makes a very slight move when put into gear but that's all. It got towed home and is parked for now. I'm really getting tired of jacking with this stupid thing. This has to be the worst Honda I've ever owned. Granted it needed work when I got it but everything was working so well until this.

The latest update is the Pioneer 700 is still sitting, runs but doesn't go.
The new plan is to spend the money early next year for a reman engine. Probably going with this one.


I'll have way more money in this machine than what I anticipated but it's a yard sale item right now and of no use to me. At least if I spend the money I'll finally have a good engine in it. The rest of the machine is good. The previous owners just did not take care of the machine. Now I know for future purchases, if the engine is trashed then get it cheap and drop in a reman engine first. I wasted an overhaul on this that we did ourselves, then Honda replaced the trashed timing chain for a measly $1000. That won't happen again!
