I’m posting here instead of Shop Talk- hope this is the right place.

I was riding the P5 Sunday, driving on dirt road in 4th gear (manual shifting). I noticed the display went from a number “4” to a solid dash- no blinking. I could not upshift to 5th or downshift to 3d.

We pulled over, and tried the turn-off/ turn on suggested in manual with no luck- stuck in 4th. I then got the transmission tool out, turned hex counter clockwise a couple times, turned the key now reading 2nd. Shifted into neutral and started it up. After I short ride on the road we proceeded to go up the trail in 4wd, and did a couple hours of riding (1-3 gears) with no problem.

Coming home I noticed as I shifted in 4th and 5th there was a hesitation as it went into gear. Kinda “waaaa-whump” and a jerk as it caught. Got home ok.

Yesterday I took it on a test ride, and it seems worse. A longer lag/ jerk going into 4th and 5th, and some lag/jerk going into 3d. There she sits now.

What happened?

Is there anything I can do at home (clutch adjustment- I’ve not had it in for service since the 500 mile).

If I need to bring to dealer in Bozeman, what $ am I looking at to fix?

It’s a 2017 model.

Thanks.

Ownership

  1. 500

  2. 700-4

  3. Do not currently own
Personally, I would try the following:
1) Make sure the battery is completely charged and ready to go, trust me these machines are sensitive to charge.
2) Make sure the oil is the correct type and level.
3) I would do a clutch adjustment.

Add to the list above along with voltage -- clutch & oil -<>- Sensitivity to Poor Ground Connection
4) Clean all Ground connections at battery & Frame -- apply Dialec Grease -- to "All " wire connections

Good luck

Oil ok
Voltage 14.3 ok
Ground connections by battery ok

It took longer to find a YouTube video, than to find a 14mm wrench and stubby screwdriver and adjust the clutch.

It shift’s perfectly, better than it ever did before (2,100 miles).

Thanks folks!!!
