This is listed as an item for initial maintenance. I’ve ordered the service manual, but it seems everything is on the slow boat these days. What should the idle rpm be? It sounds fine so I don’t think there’s an issue, just curious.

It’s pretty easy to wrap wire from tachometer around spark plug wire with yellow end reaching in front of back tire on driver’s side. I’m thinking actual rpm might be double what’s displayed here. There’s probably a setting on the tach…

Did you order the service manual off ebay?

Didn’t know about that; I’d prefer a download to paper anyway. And yes, much cheaper. Will see if I can cancel the paperback. Thanks!

Become a lifetime member here and just download it. Probably cheaper too.
I knew it was somewhere on the forum...I ended up ordering one from here:

Was $48 with shipping...should have supported the site and just bought the e-version

Have had one of those mounted on the steering column for yrs. Thought I'd put it on for the wife so she'd know when to shift. Might have rattled her even more though, just gave her more sh** she had to pay attention to. 😳
Anyway, who knows how accurate they are but it's always shown about 760 at idle.

@trigger I noticed you double posted.
So that puts you in the ball park, p500 and p520 idle around 1400 rpm.

Oh, and I got the auto shift version as a countermeasur for the wife lugging the engine.
It down shifts weather she wants to or not so nothing to distract her.

Thanks @Mudder; thought it would be in this range:
1400 +/- 100 idle rpms
If we set the tach for spark plug firing once per two revolutions, that puts mine ~1440 and @trigger's around 1520. Pulled the paper out of the bottom of the box and found this:
Tachometer

who knows how accurate they are but it's always shown about 760 at idle.
Thanks, sounds like its pretty close to what mine showed. I'm guessing margin of error is large enough for that to be within 1400 +/-100.

Yeah, I don't like how auto shifts enough to use it except possibly for relatively flat travel, but it's preferable to some shift patterns 😀

One thing I like about my Polaris Ace is the 3 lines of display that you can custom select, speed, rpm, volts, temp, total run hrs, hrs to maintenance, total miles and trip meter.
