I've played around with my 500 in some 12-18 deep snow with stock tires. In 2 wheel drive it stinks. It does fine when in 4 wheel drive though. I ran through drifts and up over piles of snow from where the city plowed and didn't have any issues nor did I get stuck. But yes better tires would help.

There's been several threads on this. Consensus says that the square profiled heavy tires don't do well in the sand or snow compared to the lighter rounded profile of others. I personally witnessed Rip Saws dig a hole in the sand where my BH's went right through it.

I use the stock tires with chains on the back and they work great for plowing snow.

I do not know the band of chains. Had them many years, used the chains on my ATV.
Letting some/most of the air out of the tire to do the install helps.

I will post some photos in the morning.

I've got chains for the 1 ton and the 520 from tirechains.com - they are great people to work with and fast shipping. Hard to stomach the price tag, but BOCO

So you have both, a 500 and a 520? Or looking to trade up to the 520? They're different tires now than what they put on the 500.

50 cm of snow last weekend. 27x10x12 front and 27x12x12 rear Mud Bugs. No problem moving forward in 4 wd but slow moving. Had it pinned to the floorboards in second gear for almost 2 hours. Went through 3/4 tank of gas.

I didn't realize that there is that much difference between stock 500 tires and stock 520 tires.

So are the 520 tires different and that much worse in snow than the stock 500 tires?

I don't have a 520 so I've never ridden on the new tires they're equipped with. They look to be a tighter tread pattern, more of a square profile like road tires. Normally those type of tires don't do as well in sand and snow. BH's have a more rounded profile and wider tread pattern which seem to give more flotation and tread cleanout. A great all around tire and why many companies have copied them. The 2.0's are a lighter version of the original BH's and a little easier to turn with only 28 hp. The aftermarket 6 ply's also wear like iron.

Am l correct assuming the 520 with stock tires would go well in snow by adding chains to the rear tires?
