Hey all, i did a dual battery set a few years ago and have always had a rear taillight issue (i don't know if my install caused any issues). i took my machine to the dealership where i purchased it and they couldn't find anything (running light works for a short time and then dies, new light installed with same outcome, but brake light engaged works just fine) and charged me quite a bit to tell me that. i just picked up the turn signal kit from the club store and i want to check the amps to light before installing (don't want to damage any new parts). any one experienced this issue or have a diagnostic approach to share? thanks in advance!

There has been several people with similar issues...

But, what are you trying to test again?
How many amps the light needs to run?
Or..
How many amps the wire outputs?

The first is an easy check, the second should be around 12v at what should be a max 5 amps.... I think.

QUESTION....
I want to ask if you have a Stinger or Cole herse relay, or similar connected to key-on power?

Can you show some pics or sketches of how things are wired?

All grounds should be checked, cleaned and start from there.

If the “running lite (tail light?) ‘ works for a while then dies - can you check it still has 12v going to it when it dies, etc.

It’s a pita to troubleshoot but maybe start with disconnecting all the 2nd battery stuff and see what ya got. Not knowing if the problem existed before or after the 2nd battery doesn’t help 😂.

Ooof, ok. it's been years since i did the project and will look for 12v to tail light connector. Will check grounds and come back to the chat room when completed. Also, confirmed Cole/ Herse relay

Thanks...
Seems everyone who has their tail lights go out have had a cole herse relay.

I have a theory flyback is causing these issues.
More info - Flyback diodes and blown out rocker switches

When you replace the tail lights, I recommend adding a flyback diode.
I offer them in the store, but you can DIY one for cheap.

When you replace your lights, I HIGHLEY recommend you install flyback protection.
One guy (I forget who) was on his 3rd taillight set, this solved it. no issues since.

good stuff !!!!!

You think the inductive load from the coil is regenerating back popping the bulbs?

Asking here - don’t know

Throw a diode in to stop it “flying back”?

Extremely helpful! Ordered a flyback protector from your shop just now and will install before installing your turn kit, or any new break lights. thanks as always!

I'm not really sure... little above my pay grade.

But..
We make this product - Pre-Wired Relay Control Switch for AUX and Key-on usage. For Stinger, Cole Hersee or any.
My first dozen or so clients had the lights go out on the switches.
I couldn't figure out what was causing it.
Researching, I built a flyback diode and it solved it.
This product now includes flyback protection.
