P500 Rubber boot on master cylinder reservoir

Is that rubber boot that fits over the lid on the master cylinder reservoir necessary. It is impossible to fit it over the lid. I have tried with in on the reservoir and with it off the reservoir. Nothing to show but skinned hands and arms!

Defiantly keeps it from vibrating off, try a flat blade screw driver.
