OK, I figured I would come here for all the opinions I know that I will get from this site!

I am really leaning towards purchasing a Talon X 2-seat. I have a riding buddy that has one (he had one of the first ones available in Michigan in 2019- family member wrecked it last year, so he has a '24 X2 with the Showa's now) I have driven it and rode in it for many miles. He keeps his machines pretty much stock, other than he did / has done the air cleaner snorkel mod. That and the last 2 years I have taken the P500 on our group's out-of-state rides and I'm really liking the non-beat up feeling at the end of ride vs. doing it on my TRX250R. But, the speed at which the group travels, the P5 is just too slow.

I've never been a "new" machine buyer, I've always bought used. However, for this I might consider it.

So getting to your opinions:

I have been looking at the used market and prices seem to be pretty consistent for 2019 ~ 2022 with accessories in the $13k to $17k range. I have also seen some dealers advertising a new '24 X2 - Showa equipped for $18,999.

What I am wanting to ask of you is are there any obvious things I should look at with a used unit?

Any model years, options I should avoid?

With the "improvements" to the 2024 models - is the extra cost of "new" worth the "better" parts?

At the moment, there is a '21 for sale privately local to me, with the live valve shocks, windshield, mirrors, lower doors and Sony stereo system with 1700 miles for $16k. I've not looked at it yet because I want to go armed with more info first.

Thanks

Unless you know the person and how it was driven I'd shy away from used, new units are stacking up at the dealers and Honda has started offering rebates.....it doesn't make sense to by used.

Remember, these are sport buggies, people beat on them, it's not like you're buying a semi utility rig that an old guy used for hunting.

When looking at the used one ask questions like;

-service records, if services at dealer call that dealer

-just general condition, check oil dipstick for condensation, bottom of machine for major dings, drips on the ground/garage floor

-look at I hate to say it, how clean is the garage, property, other vehicles, etc. are - kinda gives me an Indication of care

-does it smoke when cold started

-try L and H, these are known for blowing the L gears out

-power steering was weak on the older models - if you plan to run >30 tires, besides the power loss, expect PS being weak when you least expect it , I run 30’s with no issue on a 19X . Super atv makes a PS kit that solves the PS problem as well.

-trust your gut - why are they unloading

-is there a transferable warranty

IMO - the new x2’s are backwards in the boinger department - and it costs big money to fix - not even ride height adjustable so if you want some level of comfort and the ability to adjust the ride height as springs wear in - plan on getting 20+ Benjamin’s outta your wallet for it. The only other changes are software, some updated transfer case parts for the better, way better power steering and dash display - but part for part mostly the same as ‘19 model.

As far as accessories go - that’s so personal and many are useless - I use the 10% rule of thumb - if u strapped $4k worth of crap onto machine - it’s worth maybe $400 to me - I ain’t paying for it - take the crap off and reduce price by $4K and we will talk. But I’m frugal as can be and ain’t gonna finance someone for stuff I don’t want or need.

I personally have no issue with used - just look deeper

Good luck

When it comes to this sport I really recommend new if you can swing it. People ask for gold on their used machines. I have seen how people drive and even the people who do not drive recklessly have potential for accidents (like waking a stump in the weeds) it is part of the sport so it should be expected.

My localish to me dealer that I bought my Teryx4 has a red and blue for $17k

My Pioneer 1000-5 dealer has a black for $17.6k

I had a good experience at both places. Neither marked up anything at the time of sale. I gave my tax exempt and paid the advertised price.

is it possible to dump the new Honda ecu code into the old machines ECU or is that just a dumb question? 🙋‍♂

I doubt it, they move a bunch of stuff onto CanBus instead of K-Line so it probably won't talk.

If you want it to shift better, call PPEI and have Corey write a tune for you. It's amazing what they can do.

You want the newer power steering and live valve.
PS was updated for the 23 year model, but don't get an S.
The S is the old spec vehicle manufactured in 23 with left over parts and a slightly lower price.

The new power steering unit has power to spare and some nice features carried over from honda cars (just foofoo but they could leave it on for no cost).
The live valve will softenup the suspension when doing easy trail riding and automatically firm up if you screw up and hit something too fast.
(There is a button to switch modes but the shocks react fast enough it's meaningless (if you need the harsh ride to feel like your going fast then flip the switch))

Thanks for the input guys!

Hello Darkness- that $1500 bucks Honda rebate makes sense now why I am seeing adds from dealers for '24's around $18k. Thanks for the links to your dealer's inventory. Actually, if I go new, I do not want a matte black one. I like a black vehicle ok, but it's a Honda, it needs to have red on it and be brightly colored. That red/white/black one is growing on me. The black is all I am seeing at dealers in a 150mile range of me. That and my friend with the X2 is a black one that he "settled" for.

DRZRon1- Yeah, I know accessories don't mean crap on resale value, but I was looking at it as one less thing that I would need to buy and install myself - for those accessories that I want to have. And like I said, I've always bought used.

Robobrainiac- those are some awesome prices on live valve machines - just not certain if it is worth the 8 hour drive to get down there to take advantage of it.

906UP - Yep, know all about how people treat these things. I've watched it first hand. I expect that in the used market. For many years I've delt with the "it has a fresh top-end rebuild on it, ready to race". Then you get into it and the crank is junk, transmission is all messed up, but hey, it's got a new piston and rings in it.

A new listing for a '22 came up last night for $17k with 1536 miles on it- warn winch, synthetic winch rope, 2nd battery, and lots of lights. reason for selling is: "just don't ride it much anymore". So, $18,599 for the one from Hello Darkness dealer + $876 for Hondaline Warn winch and mount kit + sales tax................

It will be a while before the purchase happens. I'm in the beginning stages. I still need to clear it with the CFO.

But when I do, you bet there will be pictures. You guys would never let me live that down if I did not.

I have the PPEI shifting tune on my 19 X2. It's a little aggressive for farting around but when we get rolling it's great. It's also MUCH better in the sand. Erik can tune it to your liking though. Erik is amazing on these machines!
