I searched online for "Ripsey Mine" and found a Jeep site that has a gpx file of the area. I downloaded it so we can check it out next time we're out there. Friday's ride started in Florence and was a 50ish mile loop that ended through Box Canyon. Finally nice enough weather to ride in the valley.
Awesome! I need to start saving my tracks.

Went on a election eve ride yesterday to Caryville flats and the flame, since she didn't have school today. 16 elk in that one picture and there was 5 more out of the picture. Also had to take my dog on 1 last ride until deer season is over.

Headed home. I REALLY hate standard time, get to drive home through the mountain canyons dodging forest rats in the fading daylight.

A bit late, but Saturdays ride under cloudy skies near Walnut canyon, near Kelvin. Didn't take many pics. CRAZY wind gusts in the pass when i 1st went through.

Ran into some hunters in green 700-4, who stopped and ask about mine...but the wind was so brutal, we had to part ways and head for lower ground. Even got a few drops of rain.

It's hard to tell, but in that 1st pic, just to the right of the gate and up, was some smoke. Once over in the area, I got a closer look at the fire. I don't remember anything about a fire here, but it turns out it wasn't reported until around the time I took that pic.
The White Canyon fire was 135 acres when I was there. Haven't checked, but it didn't look to be gaining in size, and was moving north, which is good, because...

...(again hard to see) my trail was just at the left base of that bluff it's on.

The season is nearing an end here. 🥶 😢 🥶 😢 🥶 😢 49* at starting trail head, 44* at the end. I was just comfortable with snomo bibs and coat but lite Thinsulate gloves and velcro tennies. 😊 I've snowmobiled at MUCH colder temps but you work a lot harder.

I hJ4HgWf L

Ice - if you can break through from the shore, you can back out or, if it's thick enough, you drive right over it. (duh) This crossing is shallow, so I picked the far right where it's shallowest, if I broke through (and I did), I could probably drive through (I did) or back out.
I mR2Sk5r L

This one was recently broken, I was able to re-break it and drive through on the bottom, about 12-14" deep. You can see it's about 2" thick.
I V7HNnX7 L

This one could have been trouble. It was solid enough to carry my weight but only about half way. Once I broke through, it was like a boulder field and I crossed my fingers hoping I didn't get snagged getting across - there weren't any winch points (looking back after crossing). Really pissed I didn't start the video but it was late, sun sinking, temps dropping and I was too far from the trailer to screw around. The real problem is if you drop one or two tires, then they have to climb a vertical, slippery edge while the other tires have no traction on the ice to help pull you out. With the ice on top, this one is about 16-18" deep.

That's sharp buddy I love the white and red! If I didn't have to buy a truck here soon I would buy a talon in a heart beat!
It's been the perfect dirt bike retirement vehicle for me; I quit before I got hurt again (retired, had a long, great run). The Talon does everything I want, I love the 'shifter kart' feel with the DCT and it allows me to continue exploring the backcountry until I'm too feeble to steer.

Yesterday's ride had a good variety, lots of dust, some silty sand, dry riverbed, wet riverbed and a little bit of winching. Oh, and fishing!

The ride started at Wildcat Pass and went up to Sheep Bridge.

Getting down to this spot was easy, getting back up proved to be a challenge.

IMG 20201115 113219759 HDR XL

All 3 of us were unable to crest the top due to lack of momentum and traction. The flow of the river prevented us from gaining much momentum and the tires really dug into the soft bank.

Same thing happened to me. I tried to approach at different lines but the river flow kept wanting to take me for a boat ride.

It's a good thing my buddy, who recently bought my former Teryx, decided to stay put. He was able to winch the first guy up, and so on.

AWESOME ride, Dude. Thanks for posting. 👍 I've ridden the Sheep Bridge loop on the DR - the drop from the SE end of the bridge down to the jeep road will really pucker yer butt on a bike.

Yes it will, I've done it a couple of times on my DR650 as well. "Pucker" was exactly how I explained coming down the drop to my buddy's wife while we were there.

Ok, I wimped out, so sue me. :p I'm not going down this unless I see someone else do it, like @Lil_Steve . 🤔 I might get back here Monday, I didn't look for an alternative line but the trail continues downward, I didn't see any other tracks but I was distracted by this obstacle (didn't think to look 😊 ). Having another rider to tie off to would be a good thing.

Our mutual buddy has a sticker on the back of his bike that says "Don't follow me, I do stupid stuff". I might need to get one for the back of my Talon.

Today's ride following him on his 2 stroke dirt bike resulted in an oopsie.

It was easier to ask the bunch of guys ahead of us for help than to struggle with how the hell we were gonna get it upright. No pics but lifted and righted within seconds of the cavalry arriving.

fwiw: this came up on another thread and the reply was rather cavalier, like 'no big deal, all you need is a winch and a snatch block'. I took that to mean fasten the snatch block off to the high side somewhere, run the winch line through the snatch block and back to the B pillar and tip yerself upright. Now, I have no idea if it'll work like that but it'll be my first try. 🤔
