I recently purchased a Pioneer 1000-5 deluxe it fits my work and family needs very well but I am disappointed in the ride. I live in the high desert and all of my play riding is on trails full of rocks, mostly 3 to 4 inches tall. At pretty much any speed over 15mph I feel like I am beating the machine up. The stock tires are soft 4 ply so letting air out of them may not be a good idea. Anyone out there that has made suspension changes on a Pioneer that helped?

I have the same machine only LE model. Have the fox shocks that help. We ride the same terrain when we are out here in Arizona wintering. I found the second year we were here that disconnecting the sway bar helps. Just watch your high speed corners. The shocks help a lot.this year I bought a Talon X for out here thinking it would be a better smoother ride but it is worse than my pioneer. I put 130 bumpy miserable miles on it and decided that’s it. I called and made an appointment at Weller racing next week to get new springs and shocks revalved. I hope it helps!

Hi Elkhunter;
That really surprises me!
The Talon X has 4" front, and 5" rear more suspension travel then a Pioneer 1000. I had been thinking about a Talon to speed up my long travels in the Az Strip country. lots of rocky trails in the higher country, my speed around 10 MPH on the rocks or my back gets beat up.

I had a similar experience with my Pioneer with Elkas and a friend's talon x4. He rode with me and immediately ordered new springs

Would be nice if MGF's had different shock packages for different parts of the country, dune shocks, rock shocks and hi way shocks?

Honda won't sell the talon r in canada cuz it isn't meant for the terrain around here.they think the x is sufficient???

The x has more suspension travel but when the springs are so stiff they cannot make use of all that travel. Maybe the 15” wheels are part of the problem to. The X on a smooth trail without all the little 3-4-5” rocks it’s probably fine. Went for a 35mile ride today and a lot up in the rocky hills by Quartzite and man I was glad when we got back. I was following our crew with those little 500 razors with those little tires and not much ground clearance and I couldn’t keep up to them in the rocks. I was getting bounced all over. Hopefully the dual rate springs and revalving will help. 69f3b8b17c099452b5ed98ce4bba78cf

OK, thanks for that on the Talon’s ride.
as posters told Gpop, (welcome to the forum Gpop), up grade shocks makes a big difference.
I may do that.
the photo of the trail in the valley is typical, smooth, nice traveling.
the photo of the trail in the high country is rocky, slow speed order for me in the Pioneer.
this is Az Strip country, far north west Az. This trail went up Segmiller Mt.
