Dragonfire racing has a very nice one for $99. Follows the roll cage and rear bed lines. It is not made of tube steel.
If you look at my previous post, you can see that mine is made out of aluminum tubing, swings out, uses a slam latch, and holds 2 coolers, 4.5 gallon gas, and 2 waterproof bags hang on the outside of it. It still leaves room for my bird dog too.Dragonfire racing has a very nice one for $99. Follows the roll cage and rear bed lines. It is not made of tube steel. View attachment 157150

I originally was going to hang my spare off the back of it, but needed more bag storage, so I put the spare on a roof rack with a shovel and axe. I always build stuff to last, cuz I don’t like re-doing anything. The tubing is .188 wall 1 1/2”. The mounts on the roll cage is 1/4” steel, and the hyme joints are 1/2”. The latch is a automotive style 2 stage. When it’s closed, there’s a tab on the latch side that all of the weight sits on.think yours would be strong enough to carry weight of Spare tire & wheel and stay latched??
Sure! Don’t look at the welds too close. I’m still teaching myself how to tig weld aluminum. I get a couple of good ones, and then some s***ty ones.I really like your design, Ken. Only thing I'd consider adding would be a piece of sheet aluminum (diamond tread perhaps) across the bottom that would keep things from being able to roll out. I'd probably prefer black too, as my bumpers are black. But, your design appears to afford much more usable room than others I've seen.
QUESTION: Could you post a picture of the tailgate swung all the way open? I'd like to see how it hinges and swings.
Thanks,
Steve
Yes, I just tapped a solid pc. of aluminum the right size to slip in the tubing, then welded it in.Did you machine the threaded bungs yourself?
if you bought them, where from?
(I’ve looked for aluminum bungs before without luck)
i can handle posting some aluminum tig eye candy.

You going to become a vender Ken and market those for us?I couldn’t wait for a tailgate that was functional, so I built my own. I still have to add the 4.5 gallon Fuelpax mount and the tray for the coolers. Bags will hang on the outside. It swings out to the right side and uses a slam latch.

Probably not, this is just a hobby of mine. I just design and build 1 off stuff for myself and friends. You going to become a vender Ken and market those for us?
We’re all friends here......I just design and build 1 off stuff for myself and friends.
