I'll be staying in Hardin Valley just west of Knoxville from the 1st through the 4th of Sept., and I plan on taking my Pioneer along to squeeze in a ride on possibly the 2nd. Is Windrock the closest place to ride for a day? What do I need to do in advance to be able to ride? I assume acquire a permit to ride? Any advice appreciated.

Is this your first time to WR? Will there be other riders with you?
Asking because Royal Blue may be a better choice.

Never been to either.
Are these places open all week? Couple local places around me have strange hours and open dates.

Yes. Both systems allow 24/7 riding.
Both are great systems.
WindRock is a bit more rough as more trails are open to jeeps making some places impassable.
Royal blue is more smooth and "trail'ish". if that's a word.
You will get lost on both systems. A GPS or GPS app is recommended.

Windrock is 20 mins from Hardin Valley and is open 24-7-365. Permit is $18 per person. Can be purchased at the base of the mountain or at the Shell gas station in Oliver Springs. Get a Map!

I assume there is a designated parking area that is easily found?

Easy Found

People at the store at the base of the mountain will inform you trail grades. Unless you like using you winch stay off 15, 16, 18. 1 and 2 are easy Sunday crusies

You have to pre-download the maps for offline use and it will.
What's a good, reliable GPS? I don't care ab the fancy features, just the necessary ones. Might as well go ahead and get one.

May have let other riders chime in on that.

I had this one - Amazon.com: Garmin eTrex 20x: Garmin: Cell Phones & Accessories
But then I discovered my phone will do all that and more.... With or without phone single.
Here is info on that - OruxMap's - My GPS Replacement!
Now a I have re-purposed a cell phone (no service phone) just to use as a trial GPS.

There are a bunch of GPS apps available.

@500 I've ridden both trails several times and would recommend driving the extra 30 minutes to Royal Blue. WR is very spread out with lots of gravel roads (DUST), and they allow jeeps and crawlers, which means you could lose your SxS if you're not careful. Royal Blue is everything you ever wanted in a SxS/ATV specific trail system. In my opinion, there really is no comparison.

Good advice.
Again, I've never been to either. Definitely not looking to trailer this thing to K-town then onto an OHV park for an easy ride though.

I didn't say it was an easy ride... Royal Blue is just more enjoyable, in my opinion, because the system is specific for UTV/ATV, and because you don't have to travel dusty gravel roads half the time you are there.

Good deal.
I'll probably do RB. Cell service anywhere on the property?

I have Sprint, it was patchy, but did work on a lot of the trail at RB. Didn't work at all at Windrock.
