I did the Alpine Loop this summer, my 3rd time to do the loop, in my RZR 4 and went all the way around on it (70 miles) on 1 tank but that was its max. With that said I just did 105 miles in my P1K5 and it took about 5.5 gallons to fill it up so I have no doubt you can do the loop in a tank of gas in the P1K5 and still have some left. FYI, I also carry an extra 5 gallon Jerry Can of fuel when I ride the loop for that just in case scenario. Its better to be safe than sorry.

We have done 90. Just rolled over 1100 miles. Bought it end of May.

Cool - great info. Where do you stage up for the ride? I did part of it in a rental in Aug and had a blast. We camped in Eureka. Came home and bought my own ride.. for next year..can't wait..

I know there are a ton of variables but for argument sake let's say easy/moderate jeeep trails with a fair amount of elevation changes but no real rocking or mudding. I want to do the Alpine Loop next summer and it's approx 70 miles of jeep trails and I am trying to determine if I will need add'l fuel.
Put 87 miles on mine in one ride last week. Filled it up before leaving and then topped it off on the way home. In 87 miles I used 3.7 gallons of fuel. That is over 23 miles per gallon. Riding speed was around 18-20 mph all flat ground.

I had 4/10 of a gallon left after a day running in heavy snow. GPS said I went 42 miles but the odometer said 112. Spun the tires just a tad bit that day chewing through a lot of snow. Then I put much better tires on it. Those stock tires are junk.
This was at 9-12K feet and running 91 octane. If you run these (or any) machine at these altitudes, it is highly advisable to run 91 octane.

I think you will have better performance with 87 or even 85 octane at that altitude unless you have a turbo or blower to pump air.

mcho, I think you have that backwards. You'll never get better mileage with a lower octane fuel, especially at altitude. We loose about 20% hp just due to altitude. Use a lower octane fuel and you'll have less hp and worse mileage/power.

Went on another ride today. Wanted to post my fuel mileage results just to show how much they can vary with differences in terrain. Rode in a hilly area today with deep dry bedded sand and a lot of winding narrow trails through dense woods. Slow going, average speed 10mph. Low range 4 wheel drive all day. Rode a total of 40 1/2 miles and got an average of 9 1/2 miles per gallon. Temp gauge stayed on 3 bars most of the day. Like I said, hard pulling.

HP loss formula (Elevation X .03 X HP / 1000) - an example at 5000ft altitude - 5000 X.03 X 72 = 10,800 / 1000 = 10.8 HP Loss

Thinner air tends to prevent detonation, so lower octane can be used. What you have to remember is that fuels are blended for the area they are sold in (there is even a difference blend for summer and winter fuel). Therefore 91 octane fuel sold in Denver will actually have less octane than fuel sold at sea level.

Are you trying to confuse us with the facts?

My fuel gauge is inaccurate as hell. I'll be down to half tank and only used 2 gallons. Btw running it out of fuel is no biggie. FI nowadays is self priming. Worst case scenario is you turn key on/off couple times to run pump enough to get it to the injectors. Not like the old days when you ran your tractor out and had to crack all the injector lines to bleed off the air lol.
Same here my fuel gaugedrops off quick. I did run it out at the house just to see how long it would go blinking. I just cycled the key 3 times it fired right up

Me 1000 and 3 700's all following each other rode 45 miles our first day. Steep grades. Flat ground and rocky mostly slow go. It took us all right at 5 gallons to fill up. 9 miles to the gallon. All depends on your rpm range

I just did a ride of 132 miles on one tank of gas. The low level started blinking at 130 miles. I live at the 6000ft in elevation. Most of the ride was done around 7000ft and a mountain passes at 9200ft. I didn't push to hard. All of the run was in 2wd running it up and down through the rpm range up to 40 to 45 mph. It only took 5 gallons to fill it back up. Not bad, 132 miles on only 5 gallons. That's 26.4 mpg. I'm using 87 octane gasoline. This was a break in run. The noises sure did quite down by the end of the run. Over all I'm very impressed with this machine. The only complaint I have is the dust rolling in from the back.
