A lot more control over the electronics. Most RTR radios just have the throttle and steering trims and sometimes a dual rate. The aftermarket radios allow for additional channels to be used on the receiver, throttle mixing, exponential, throttle and steering end points. For example, on my Futaba I have a switch set to 65% idle speed. I can flip the switch and it's like setting cruise control at 65% throttle. I also have ABS set to another switch that I can turn on. It's not very useful on the crawler but pretty cool on a race buggy. Biggest thing for me was to be able to set the throttle percentage. I have a profile on my radio for the X-Maxx that is set to 10% throttle so my kid can drive it around. I have a push button switch set to idle speed of 15% that she can press for a "turbo boost".
The controller that came with mine is a STX2, I'm pretty sure it's an entry level controller. What you recommend for rock crawling? Would be nice to have controller that would control mutable buggies?

I was messing around with mine after reading about venting, squished the tire and could hear air coming out of the rims, vented rims?
Yep, if they are plastic wheels they are usually vented from the factory. The scx24 wheels are vented from the factory. I don't like the vent hole in the wheel because water will get in and not have a way out. That causes the foams to break down really fast. With a vent in the tire it will throw the water out when the tire spins up. I usually put a vent in the tire even if there's a wheel vent.

Check with your hobby shop and see what they stock. Probably Spectrum stuff. You might be able to trade your RTR running gear in on a better one. It won't be worth much but I know the hobby shop I worked at in college would buy the transmitter and receiver from the rtr gear and give credit towards better equipment.

You should change your handle for this thread to RC Tech. HA! We do appreciate you putting up with all the dumb questions. We may need lights at the 2021 TO. HA!

They make a two stage foam insert that is supposed to be the latest and greatest. It's a firm foam close to the wheel to keep the sidewall stiffer and soft foam on the outer part to keep the tread soft and terrain forming.

Yep, what @Mopower58 said. They sell all sorts of foams in different degrees of hardness and shape. A lot of the fancy ones have foams that are cut with valleys in the outer foam which let the tire flex and grab. I never got into the crawlers deep enough to get into foam cutting. The compound on the good tires is crazy.

Now you need to get a 1/10 trail truck
HA! Yes, these cheap rail buggies have my attention as of now. I just wanted something small to ride with the boys that didn't cost a lot! Got two cheap O's that keep me plenty entertained as of now. The The Temper is a lot faster than the Night Crawler?

@JeremieBaker posted a statement about the drive shafts breaking on the Temper EXC, I tried to find info on this and only found info on the Gen 1 and all it's issues. Any inside info would be appreciated.

Can't help you out there. I didn't even know what a Temper was until I just Googled it.
