I recently added a second battery and a True isolator.

The isolator seems to be working correctly, and I am in the process of moving everything to the second battery.

The only thing currently on the second battery currently is a set of LED cubes, the primary battery has cooling fans and a winch on it.

The other night on the trails I noticed my volt meter was reading 13.7 on the primary battery with the cooling fans on, and up to 14.1 when the fans are off. The secondary battery however will not read about 12.5 even with all the accessories off and a constant 11.9 with them all on.

I didn’t know if this was normal or should I start searching for the issue. Could it be how I have the isolator wired in? I used the winch relay for my Common ground, it was the closest thing to the negative terminal. Or could my accessory battery be to small?

Where are you grounding your second battery?
If its reading in the 11 range.. something is wrong.

I have it grounded to what I believe (most likely wrong) is my winch relay

Probably should’ve done this prior to rolling with it...but according to the attached photo and site, that would be my starter switch...oops

So where is everyone grounding their second battery, I only got about 1’ of ground with the TrueAm kit so I figured it had to be pretty close

I have my 2nd battery under the seat and grounded to the frame under the seat, and the extra blue tape'd ground under the hood

I use the honda factory winch ground cable to ground my winch and 2nd battery on 2 different machines. I've not had any issues yet but a lot of guys recommend adding a separate ground wire for the second battery.

I felt like that's where you grounded. Your expectation fit the bill.

Anyways.

YOU GROUNDED TO A HOT!!!!

Remove that asap. Before it ***EXPLODES***
That's the starter solinode.
One side test as ground but its not.

Sounds like something I would do....

I am now grounded here, but it still doesn’t register over 11.9 even while running.

You have jeopardized the integrity fo the battery. Pray it stabilizes.

Is the blue light on the isolator on?
Check voltage at each post of the isolator.
If they are NOT the same then...
Disconnect the second battery at the isolator.
Wait for the blue light to come on.
Check voltage again at both isolator post. Is voltage the same?
If YES. The isolator is good. The battery is bad.

Awesome! I appreciate it.

Luckily the battery has a 90 day warranty, I just hope I didn’t damage the isolator.

Alright guys....help 🥺 lol

I got a new battery, come to find out the one I had was only a 4ah battery. My new one is 30ah 400CCA

My only question is, why won’t my volt meter read that both batteries are 14.0 volts with nothing on and the machine running. Is this normal? I have been chasing this for like 3 days!!

Hey man.
You need to phone a friend to come help look over your project. lol.
Those small accessories should not put it in the 12v range running. Unless you have high draw fans.

Love to help but I'm going to need full details on what you have wired where.
  • Where is the isolator ground to?
  • Where is the second battery ground to?
  • How are you supplying power to the panel?
  • How are you powering the volt meter?
  • Where is the volt meter grounded to?

-Isolator is grounded to the main battery
-second Battery is grounded to the winch ground (for real this time)
-Power to the panel is coming via the main battery volt meter positive
-volt meter is coming from the main battery positive terminal
-Volt meter is grounded to the main battery

The power to the relay/fuse box is coming directly from the secondary battery positive and negative.

What kind of isolator? Are you sure your batteries are hooked to the proper sides?

Use the ground honda provides for the winch. That’s what I did. If your putting batter under hood it will reach the 2nd battery terminal.
