Ordered one of these to try in the Gatekeeper. Supposed to be awesome for crawlers. Integrated ESC so saves you a little space and wiring.

Excuse my ignorance, what do the numbers 1.9 and 2.2 designate? I am looking for tires and wheels for an SCX10-II and these numbers keep showing up.
Wheel size. The overall tire diameter is all over the place regardless though depending on brand. I have some 1.9 Pro-Line tires that are huge compared to the set of 1.9 Axial Maxxis tires that came with the SCX10. If you want a scale looking tire, stick with a 1.9 with a overall diameter around 4.5"-4.75" (I think the stock Axial Maxxis Trepadors are 4.75" OD).

Thank you, I kinda thought that but being new to this RC thing you never know!

It's pretty damn confusing. It seems to be a little better now that the rock crawlers have really taken off. When I got the first SCX10 and was looking for scale size tires similar to the stock tires, they never listed the OD. You'd end up with a 5" tall tire from one company and a 3.5" tire from another so it was really hard to find a "1.9 scale tire". I was just looking around on RPPHobby.com (awesome site for crawler stuff) and almost all the tires include the OD now.

That's good to know, I plan on building an SCX-10-II with a Proline Ram body and prefer a silver/chrome looking wheel and an aggressive fairly wide tire.

The 2.2 tires are typically for the comp crawlers (like the one @Smitty335 bought). You can make them work on the trail trucks but you have to run huge extenders and often have to chop up the body.

Between you and JB I will be broker than a cracker on the bottom of the pack!
That's what friends are for!

You're lucky, it was all crappy plastic wheels when the crawlers first hit the scene. Vanquish makes a lot of high end parts for the crawlers and they were the only show in town making the licensed beadlocks. They were something like $150 per set!! The good old Chinese knocked them off real quick and now you can get the same thing for $39.99. If you ever see "Chanquish" it's people referring to the knock-off Chinese Vanquish wheels, lol.

So how much does it cost to get started in a decent crawler? Once again, you guys know how to find ways to spend others money.
You talking 1/10 or the micros (1/24)? There is no better option than the SCX24 and it's ready to go out of the box for $100-$120 if you're looking for something small.

You just have to be wary to the "Ready to Run" trucks that still require a charger and battery. That'll run you another $75-$80 if you buy a cheaper battery and bare bones charger.

Then you've got to decide if you want a comp crawler (like the Losi Nightcrawler @Smitty335 bought) or a trail truck. The comp crawlers have crazy articulation and can run the larger 2.2 tires. The trail trucks are more scale and usually a lot faster than the dedicated crawlers. Neither is "fast" compared to a basher or race based platform. Just got to decide what you want to do my friend and we can help spend your money :D

I'll throw a few out here. All of these are great 1/10 crawlers. Links are from Amainhobbies.com

Trail Trucks:

Element Enduro Trailrunner (includes battery and charger) - $449

1609442362793

Element Gatekeeper RTR (no battery or charger) - $399

1609444633197

Axial SCX10 III RTR (no battery or charger) - $499 (comes with a better radio than most RTR models)

1609442585107

Axial SCX10 II Honcho RTR (no battery or charger) - $329

1609442816828

Traxxas TRX-4 K5 Blazer RTR (no battery or charger) - $489

1609443586571

Traxxas TRX-4 Sport RTR (no battery or charger) - $339

1609443965692

Losi Rock Rey RTR (no battery or charger) - $399 (more of a rock bouncer than a crawler)

1609444706774

Comp Crawlers

Losi Nightcrawler SE RTR (no battery or charger) - $299

1609444517558

Axial Wraith Spawn RTR (no battery or charger) - $399 (sort of a hybrid rock crawler and trail buggy)

1609444866635

There some cheaper options in the Redcat Everest models, but I have no idea on how they perform or hold up. Redcat was cheap toy-grade garbage back when I was racing competitively.

Batteries are dependent upon the model you buy, but 2s and 3s LiPo packs can be had for $25-$35 on Amazon.

Chargers - These are really dependent on what you plan to charge. My XMaxx runs on 8s, so I need 2 x 4s LiPo batteries to run it. On a single channel charger it would take me a couple hours to charge up the two packs I need. I bought a 2 channel charger that will do 10 amps per channel, so I can charge both 4s packs at the same time in around an hour. If you only need to charge one battery, you can get away with a cheaper/simpler charger.

iSDT D2 - $139 (Dual channel)

1609445392117
1609445467150

Venom Pro 4 - $49 (single channel, great beginner charger)

1609445765536

Traxxas EZ-Peak "Completer Package" - $199 (2 channel; Probably best bang for your buck you can get if you go with a Traxxas vehicle as this comes with 2 3s 5000mah LiPo batteries as well)

Looks like the Hobby Shop owner steered me right into a decent entry level rock crawler.
