I've done my research about the back up light install, and I'm convinced that it's a must-have mod after feeding in the dark all deer season this year. I'm also (slightly less) convinced that I'm capable of doing this after reading the awesome step by step instructions on the forum.

I have found reference to several part numbers for harnesses (back up beepers I believe) for this project. If memory serves me correctly, @ToddACimer noted that he used part number 08Z02-HL3-A00 for his install, and this worked out well. It appears this is a 5 dollar part at my dealer, and is for a Pioneer 700.

Before I dig into this project I will order the 5 dollar part to avoid having to rig up a plug in my blank/dummy, but I'm not going to try the 20 dollar plug that is designed for the 1000. I have read reports that this 700 harness worked for folks, and I've read other reports that it didnt. So, my final question (until I get the machine torn apart and inevitably realize I'm in over my head) is:

Can anyone confirm that part number 08Z02-HL3-A00, back up harness for P700, worked for them on their 2018 Pioneer 1000?

Mine is a 1000-5 deluxe, but I can't believe there is a difference in that wiring between the sub models, really just concerned about the years.

Thanks in advance!

Dang thanks @Montecresto and @ToddACimer. I know I read that thread in it's entirety, I don't know how I missed that! I've read soo much on it at this point its all a blur I guess.

Episode 101 was short and sweet!

I modified my harness by adding a second switched ground on the dash and a diode. Now I can have my reverse lights on anytime and they come on in reverse

Even better. Do you have details of that posted somewhere with diode specs and all?

So I completed this project last night using some 14 gauge jacketed speaker wire i had laying around. Probably heavier than what I need, but okay yes? I'm second guessing this for some reason this morning.

I'm no wiring expert but it seems like there are some members that know a fair amount about it. Thanks in advance!

Not knowing the exact light you used, but more than likely 14ga is overkill for the application.

You should be fine. I don't think the wire in the Honda Harness is 18ga. That will be the limitation.

Yeah, harness was significantly thinner.

Thanks for easing my mind!

Thats the light x2. I agree the gauge is overkill, I guess I'm second guessing if "speaker wire" is significantly different than "lighting wire"? I figure the lights will only be run in reverse, so it probably not a major deal either way?

Jacket rating for environment is going to be the difference. Maybe indoor low temp rated jacket vs SOOW rating for temp and oil.

@ohanacreek would that concern you running from the harness out to the rear bumper? I ran the wire in a loom alongside the factory harness for the tail lights, so nothing that's right on the engine/muffler.

Sorry for my ignorance on the topic: I've never really wired anything more complex than a car radio.

The jacket might get brittle over time and crack maybe short. 14ga is overkill so you’re good there.

I would never have used speaker wiring just because I’m OCD when it comes to my wiring. But you’ll function just fine like that. Being in split loom will protect the jacket from decay for years to come.

Hmm we'll see how long my OCD allows me to run like this before re-running the wires. Everything is pretty easily accessible so it shouldn't be a big deal to keep an eye on/redo.

Do you guys have a product you like for wiring your LEDs? Any guidance is appreciated.

Where in Ohio are you?
I use automotive grade GXL wire, sheathed in Techflex, shrink tube on end, then terminated into an appropriate weathertight connection.
I can crimp the harness connector onto 10' of wire, sheath it, then drop in the mail if you want. Or if you are close enough, just meet up somewhere.
