Checking the oil

This is the first machine that I have ever had thats made me scratch my head on checking the oil,it seems to take a very long time to drain back to the bottom of the engine. Do you check it cold or like the manual says because it varies a bunch on mine Thanks...

Follow the manual. If you check it cold it will be wrong.
on level ground...
Let the motor warm up at idle for 5-10 mins. stop the motor and let it sit for 3 mins.
Check the oil, when checking do NOT screw the dipstick in.
The stick allows for some variation.
It should be in between the 2 marks. not above or below.
