Today we took the Pioneer out for the first ride after I installed the Fox 1.5 Podium shocks this week. We went Black River Falls WI, we only put about 60 miles because the girls (7 and 8 years old) wanted to be done. But at least we got out on the trails.
I was pleasantly surprised with the improvement in ride quality over the stock shocks! The trails we were have a lot of sand and get washboarded very easy. With the stock shocks would usually only be able to top out at 25mph before the bounce got to be too much, but with the Foxes on I found myself going 35 or more! The ride was so much improved and they was no "porpoising" in some of the whoops sections of the trails. These shocks really soak up the terrain! My wife rode in front for about 1/2 the ride and let the girls swap into the front the other 1/2, she said the ride in the rear was almost as good as the front.
I never changed the preload on the springs, I just put them on the way they were right out of the box. I have the dial 6 clicks from the softest setting. I did play with the dial a bit and turned it to 10 for softest and then down to 3 clicks. My wife thought that 6 gave the best ride overall, but I will be playing with the dial and preload to see if I can fine tune the ride more.
Are the Fox Shocks worth the $1300 price I paid for them, in our case with my wife having had back surgery last October and having two vertebrae fused, yes they are worth every penny. But even for me without back problems they are still worth it. I would highly recommend them!
