Need some input on the pros and cons of portals vs internal gear reduction. The stock pioneer is not sufficient for my use. I do know they are VERY PROUD of the portals $$.

If I was looking to run bigger tires IGR would be my choice. It doesn't increase the width or height of the machine. It also doesn't require any additional maintenance.

Not really looking to increase tire size, maybe 28 or 29. I need lower gear ratio, Need to crawl thru the mountains quiet and very slow.

Have you had the product improvement campaign clutch update? The new clutch cover seems to make the machine a lot smoother at slow speeds

yep, would like clutch fully engaged at real low speed. I could can less about the top end, 60+ equals a large coffin, will gladly give up 15 to20 for slow crawl without lurching

The max is 25% I believe but there is talk of a lesser reduction.

25% doesn’t sound like much but it is multiplied by the trans gear and diff gears. I’ve driven a friends and it’s nice.

The portals add height and width and stress on the front suspension. Not worth it for the woods and mountains IMO. It’s probably great for flat land mud and swamps though.

I'm also thinking about the IGR. For those that have done it, how do you like the results?

I’ll plan on doing it. I have driven two other vehicles with the gear reduction and it will fit my riding style.

It may not be your thing if you enjoyed the high speed. It’s supposedly the same as stock if you’re running the reduction and A 32 inch tire. So I would assume that you will get a lot of the speed back if you are using a 30 inch or taller tire. For someone like me that is running a true 30 inch tire with stock gearing, it will be great to gain some of that gearing back like I had stock size tires.

I'm running 28" Outbacks. Really don't need the top speed just a lot of mud and sand.

I am also thinking about gearing down my 2017 P1000eps. Where do I find info on these gears? I've never heard of "portals".

Here’s some Portals for you to read about.
Honda Pioneer 1000 4" Portal Gear Lift

For the internal gears, I don’t have the info handy. Search the forum for “IGR” and you should find some stuff.

Mine is in the shop now getting the clutch campaign done, and while they were in there I worked it out with them to do the IGR. My parts are supposed to be back from NC this Wednesday and I’m hoping to have my machine back by Saturday. I also do a lot of slow crawling and nasty mud so I’m anxious to see how this will improve the performance. Unfortunately I’ll have to wait for the mud cause everything is frozen solid till May!! I’ll give it a shot in the snow though when I get it back and let you know how it goes.

Is anyone running gen3 4" portals? I was wondering how much oil everyone else was able to get in theirs. I know a guy that has gen2 and getting a 1/4 of a quart in each box and I just filled mine for the second time and only took a little under a half a quart for all 4 again. I dont think it's a problem because I'm filling it until it runs out then installing the plug but just wanted some other input.

Thanks guys
