Funny you mention that. I hadn’t heard it referred to as such but the old man I ride with in Arkansas just told me about this last ride. Says he’s going to get into it. We’re you thinking about that well I posted a picture of?
yes very much so. There are guys in Europe pulling MP40's and so much other cool ordinance out of rivers and bogs.

Holy hell, lol. That’s cool but I’d rather pull Kit Carson’s old revolver out of that.

I'm pretty much a history freak. Everywhere I go I try to immerse myself in the local history. I always look out for the historical markers and if I can manage it, I try to read up on places before I get there. Typically I have a general direction on my trips out west but I don't always have a planned route. So sometimes I find myself in backwoods hamlets and tiny mountain towns far off the beaten path. Once I'm there, I try to delve at least into the surface waters of the past. The western states Backcountry discovery routes are an awesome resource for discovering these far away places locked within vast wilderness strongholds. I keep getting carried away...
These are all within the borders of Idaho.

You would appreciate the area which we ride near our property in New Mexico because it’s rich in history. For one the city of Santa Fe was already thriving (under Spanish control) when the Mayflower landed. Some of the mountain men that worked the Rockies in the very early 1800’s observed a different way of making money noticing that Santa Fe didn’t have merchandise that existed in the United States (which went no further west than Kansas City at the time) and vise versa. A mountain man named William Becknell opened up the Santa Fe trail in 1821 bringing American made goods and trading for Spanish goods. 60 years later the railroad followed the same trail. These are pictures of some of the ruins we see along the Santa Fe trail while riding.

I'm thinking I might start planning on excursions into the west following leads and looking for old settlements and ghost towns to ride near. Maybe bring a gold pan...

Hi Lee, I have a couple of properties in the foothills of the Rockies (one at 7,500 and one at 8,000 ft elevation) west of Las Vegas 30 and 45 minutes. I’m at my ranch in Oklahoma presently but I’ll be back in the ‘Land Of Enchantment’ mid July. From our property we ride straight to the Carson National Forest. You’ll be more than welcome to join us to ride, and we have accommodations should you want to stay a weekend!! :)

I’m heading out Friday morning for a two week road trip and along the way I’ll be visiting St. Elmo Colorado. The most intact “ghost town” I’ve ever seen before. There is a utv trailhead there in which you can hit the NF and camping along the way cross a half dozen passes in a single weekend. I’d like to do that some day!!

On one of our attempts to find Bradshaws grave i noticed something on my Topo App called Lehman's Mill and decided to check it out. Glad i did. A piece of history slowly returning to the desert...

All the trails into and out were overgrown (in the desert!) except for the "main highway" down the bottom of the canyon that gets rearranged with every monsoon season.

Had no ideal it was there, but some research shows the history...

I've been considering buying part of a ghost town so I thought I'd resurrect this thread with another historical trail. Well, kinda...
On this 3rd day of August in 1846, is the day that the Donner Party found a note warning the emigrants that their expected route through the mountains ahead was nearly impassable. Hastings, an unscrupulous trail guide had created his own “short cut” route and wasn’t even at the meeting place at Fort Bridger, but had left word for the party to continue on. Hastings had claimed easy passage through the rugged Wasatch Mountains, but had left a note attached to a forked stick for the party explaining that the route was more difficult than he thought. Eventually reduced to cannibalism, only 45 of the original 89 emigrants reached California the following year.
