February 14, 2023 — ALPHARETTA, Georgia
  • New Talon “S” series improves product availability
  • Updated Talons to be released later this year
  • Pioneer 1000 multipurpose SxS family returns with new colors
American Honda announced today a new “S” series for the 2023 Talon family, in a move intended to satisfy high demand for the popular sport side-by-sides by increasing inventory availability at Honda Powersports dealers nationwide. Produced to 2022 model-year specifications, the Talon “S” lineup includes the configuration options offered last year: R and X two-seater versions (the former aimed at high-speed rough terrain, the latter excelling at nimble changes of direction), as well as an X four-seater. All three of these configurations are offered in both standard and FOX Live Valve trim levels, making for a total of six great “S” series options, all of which tout comfort-focused enhancements that were applied for the 2022 model year.

In the same announcement, Honda revealed that additional 2023 Talon sport side-by-side versions—more information on which will be released later this year—will feature significant updates aimed at improving comfort and convenience. Among the changes will be upgrades to suspension, styling, cabin comfort, accessory integration and more.

For example, non-FOX Live Valve versions will come with new Showa shocks with updated tuning to improve ride comfort and rebound control while maintaining resistance to bottoming. Wheelbase on the R versions will be reduced to allow a tighter turning radius and better maneuverability on tight trails, and a new electric power steering unit will offer better performance in all areas, while also adding a return-to-center function. Updates to the ignition mapping will smooth the transition from deceleration to acceleration, and the dual-clutch transmission’s Sport mode will also work in low range, helping with aggressive driving or when carrying loads. New full-coverage doors will provide better mud and water protection to the driver and passengers, and will incorporate convenient cup holders and storage pockets. Stylish new aluminum wheels will have eight pairs of V-spokes, and new Kenda tires with thicker sidewalls will improve resistance to pinch flats. A new ground will also be added at the front of the vehicle to simplify wiring for accessory installation. New colors will be available for all versions as well.

“In just five years since the Talon family’s introduction, Honda’s sport side-by-sides have grown increasingly popular with customers, resulting in impressive demand,” said Brandon Wilson, American Honda Manager of Sports & Experiential. “We recognize the importance of product availability, and we’re happy to address that goal with the Talon ‘S’ series, which presents a unique opportunity to get more vehicles to our eager customers. At the same time, we continue to refine the platform, and we’re excited to improve the Talons even more for the 2023 model year. The Talon family has always been about enjoying outdoor recreation with family and friends, and these moves should bring that experience to more customers.”

Also included in today’s announcement is the 2023 Pioneer 1000 family, which receives updated colors for the new model year. Offering customers a wide range of options to best suit their needs, Honda’s flagship multipurpose side-by-side continues to offer workhorse ability and inspiring performance. The Pioneer 1000 Trail is equipped for fun two-track adventures, while the Pioneer 1000 Forest is outfitted for pursuing other outdoor interests such as hunting or fishing. The Pioneer 1000 Deluxe touts impressive versatility, and the Pioneer 1000 EPS is a great value-focused option. All four trim levels are offered in three-seat and five-seat configurations, the latter featuring Honda’s QuickFlip® seating arrangement. (Extending customers’ Pioneer 1000 options even more is the 2023 Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew, a six-seat version introduced last August.)

Produced in the USA, all Talon and Pioneer side-by-sides continue to offer Honda’s legendary durability, quality and reliability.

2023 Talon 1000S Series
Aimed at expanding product availability, the new 2023 “S” series of Honda Talons tout all of the improvements applied to the platform for 2022, including a meter location that maximizes visibility; long shift paddles for easy manual gear changes while steering; good mud protection via seat sealing; optimized ignition timing for smooth transitions from deceleration to acceleration; eye-catching styling; optimized i-4WD and a pre-wired switch panel to facilitate installation of electronic accessories. In addition to these S versions, updated Talons will be offered for the 2023 model year, with details to come later.

So how does this S model designation increasing inventory availability as per press release, when most dealers have zero inventory on hand to choose from already?

This is my opinion based on announcements stemming from last summer / fall:

Honda Power Equipment announced they were ceasing production on push lawnmowers etc. at that North Carolina factory in Summer 2023, then those assembly lines would then be used manufacture all Honda ATV's exclusively. This in turn would free up the few assembly lines that had been dedicated to ATV production in Timmonsville SC for the "NEW" 2023 Talon models with the improvements later this year, thus allowing multiple lines of production for the concurrent Talons lineups making the Timmonsville SC facility UTV production only.

They set the bar so low they can only go up.

Smoke and mirrors. '23's aren't ready so rebrand the same thing from'22 until they are.
Exactly, they might have 23 China chips though. I have lost all confidence in Honda and they're delivery dates.

So after all of the thousands of hours spent to develop and test spring combinations and internal valving setups for the non live valve Fox shocks.....they switch to Showa, and somehow this is supposed to be a good thing. I'm not convinced, not the least bit.

I'm betting it has to do with supply issues. That's been a rumored hold up for awhile now. Hence the lack of LiveValve/Trail/Forest models and very few base models Talons.

They figure if they can't get the Fox stuff might as well get something together and get it out the door. Showa is one of the best in the dirtbike world, so perhaps they sprinkled their Magic on some SXS shocks.

All depends on Honda specs.
Having been a Honda offroad and street moto guy for a very long time, before I decided I wanted to have cup holders, Showa is Honda's baby and I have resprung and revalved and modified every set. I figure you're going to end up doing it anyway, as the average OEM suspension is never going to be perfect for your personal requirements.

Below are the last few sets of Showa forks I've had done and a Showa Shock. These have all received the full monty, DLC coatings, hard anodizing, upgraded cartridges and internal components with valving. I'm just now learning the ins and outs of this '21 Talon I bought new in November of last year. I can never leave anything alone and I've already done the Shock Therapy springs, valving, and compression adjusters.

This is exactly it.
But more so they have a plethora of 2022 primary parts waiting on odd and ends. They are being forced into 2023 and not ready with truckload of 2022 motors out back. That's why they are offering crate motors for the first time ever.

Regarding the shocks.
That's also a supply issue. Take what they can get or do without.

I'm betting more on what Smitty335 posted - cost. As far as bering one of the best in the dirt bike world, maybe their $25,000 A-Kit forks. But the stock Honda Showa offroad suspension has never been considered on par with KYB.

Wheelbase on the R versions will be reduced to allow a tighter turning radius and better maneuverability on tight trails

So what did they do? Put less forward sweep in the front a arms and put the X's rack on it? I am googling to find the difference, but not having any luck yet. Putting less forward sweep a arms and a X rack has been a plan for my R, but time and to many other irons in the fire have not allowed it to happen yet.

The X rack just lets the rack go further side to side. The body is narrower so the inner tie rod knuckle doesnt bottom out on the housing.

You wont find any information on the 2023 updates yet until Honda releases the full information on what all they've changed on 2023 models.

I understand the difference between the racks, the body being narrower on the X allows the tires to turn further. Honda did this so with the forward swept a arms on the R, it would not bind and break the CV joints as they are on a tighter angle when tires are straight.
I will keep watch to see how/where Honda shortened the wheel base to make it turn sharper. It is the main complaint with my R, oh and the air box design.
