I need a better spare tire carrier.

I bought the SuperATV spare tire carrier in 2021 because a friend had the same on his Talon. On 3-21-23 with less than 1000 miles on the machine, my spare was rolling down a hill. I didn't know it. A friend behind me called and said he picked it up. With a warranty so short, it almost expired before it was installed. I took it to a welding shop and had it welded up. I had them add a side support brace since it had nothing to stabilize it in stock form. They also added much front to back support.

I just finished a 5 day 800 mile ride on the Arizona Peace Trail. I added a cable through the wheel and around the pipe going between the 2 sides of the roll cage. If the carrier broke again the wheel would still be dangling, but attached. I thought. On day 2, the guy following me told me my carrier was broken. The horizontal pipe partially broke. The tire sagged down onto my spare gas can. And I think that prevented it from braking completely off. My cable would have disappeared with the wheel.

In my opinion the horizontal pipe should have been a heavier gauge and/or larger diameter. And it should have had some side brackets for support. The pipe that extended out from the horizontal cross pipe should have been closer to that pipe. That long distance is just leverage for the heavy weight of the tire to continually flex the pipe. Since this is an off road machine, there will be some very hard bumps encountered. This carrier may have been perfect for all city roads with no potholes. But for me, I will never ever buy anything from SuperAtv again.

I think I will order the P/N: HN10T-11-0001 Tercel Spare Tire Carrier from beforehttps://www.aproveatv.com/mobile/product.php?lang=en&tb=2&cid=627
Does anyone have any experience with them? It uses a larger 1.75" cross over pipe. And the wheel attachment is closer to that pipe. It has some rear visibility. And I don't want a higher center of gravity. My Talon has been parked on it's side before. Don't want that experience again.

This seems to me the best configuration to start with. Against warranty, I will still add some additional supports. I don't want to lose my spare, again. I may be a grandpa. But I don't ride like one.

I just looked up HN10T-11-0001. I don't like that it has 2 points of interface with the roll cage. 3 points make a plane and a spare tire is a lot of mass to stabilize around a single axis. That looks like the kind of part that will fatigue crack, fail and potentially cause harm or damage. No experience with that particular part but it's poor design practice.

I agree. That's why I said I will modify on arrival. I do like the SuperAtv clamps to the roll cage. I wish this had the same. But I think if I bracket up to the overhead roll cage pipe, it would be quite stable.

Get a GOOD fabricator to build you one. Most of the carriers I've seen are pretty light duty. I also don't like how they are carried so high. I built my own that mounts to the rear of my ABF Fabrication cage, and the bottom of it is supported by the Bosman rear bumper. The cage is .095 ChroMoly and the mount is .120 wall DOM tubing. It's really easy to install the tire n wheel on. The wheel plate came from AJK Off Road. The rear view mirror is still useful. 20240802 09134920240618 172141

I didn't want that configuration because it was too restrictive of my trunk. It looks like good weight distribution and decent rear visibility. Getting to your filter and adding oil would be awkward.
I forgot to add pictures of my fractured carrier. I'll add them here. My first break, and my second disappointment.

I just received this. I need to do some minor fab to accommodate the large number of Packouts I usually carry, but I'm going to give it a whirl. I bought it from SuperATV (who has thier own version), but this one is made by Assault Industries. It lifts up to allow access to the bed but locks down when you're underway.

Here is the SuperATV version. It mounts differently, but works the same way (lifts up to allow access to the bed, locks down when underway).

My son had the SuperATV carrier on his and your scenario is exactly what I pictured in my head when I saw it. I did the Tusk carrier, it clamps in 4 spots instead of 2 and was about the same price for a much sturdier option.

I liked the dual cross pipes. The vision is more obstructed. I could live with that. But the thin looking vertical pieces concerned me. I've had my carrier break twice. I'm not very trusting anymore. The one I will probably order will also need some additional brackets added.

Have you considered just simply jettisoning the spare all together?

Seriously, why haul around all that extra weight? There are sidewall slugs, countless patch kits and even emergency valve stem kits that will get you back to camp with a simple compressor or CO2 kit. Worse case you bum a ride, call a friend, or have someone run the spare to you.

I used to haul a spare…no need imo for the remote chance I fully rip the tread off .

IMO bring the spare, but leave it on the trailer.

All that extra weight on the tail just makes the car drive funny imo.

I agree with you on this. We used to carry spare tires with us all the time and after bending mounts and it constantly being in our way while never needing it. We have since gone to carrying tire repair kits and a tube off Amazon that will work for a 32 inch tire. With a bead lock wheel, you can fairly easily, as a last resort, tube the tire on the trail. I have one tire tubed and it has held up for quite a while.

I've ridden around the world solo on a motorcycle. Things happen that you would never dream of. I was riding in Greece when I heard a clicking sound. Couldn't identify where it was coming from. Then the clicking stopped. That really worried me. A 10" section of my rim had broken off. My tube was pushing out between the rough rim and tire bead. Of course I didn't carry a spare wheel. But with a SXS, if I lose a wheel or rip a tire worse than plugs can fill, I will be happy to have that extra weight with me. And my guess is that over half my riding is out of cell service. I'm not ready for a satellite phone. I just finished the AZPT a week ago. The last 2+ days we did not see a SXS on the trail.

I did decide to go with the double horizontal pipe 4 clamp version from Rocky Mountain ATV. Great reviews. I installed it today. Quick install and it looks sturdier than the pictures. I won't add any extra bracing as I thought I would need to. $30+ cheaper than buying on Amazon.

Totally your choice, just presenting a different view.

Just pointing out what others have said countless times before on this forum.

Honestly you’re probably better off making one yourself or having a local welding shop make one. Unless it’s from one of the small businesses that support this site and others it’s likely Ching Chong bs welding and tube.

I agree with that. Depends on where and how you ride. And I do a lot of solo riding, which most of my riding friends don't.
Most of my miles are also solo, so a spare is mandatory safety equipment IMO. I've since quit carrying the top spare, it's too heavy for my ole butt to get up there without using a come along to the rafter peak in the garage which is a PITA. The lower spare is mounted on a Dirt Road Fabrication bed extender but, last I heard, he had cut back on production because he couldn't keep up with orders - a good problem to have.

I got the Tusk carrier and installed. It looks sturdy enough that I won't add any extra supports. I didn't want the high weight. But it allows decent rear viewing. I can barely open my TSC trunk enough to use. I will probably need to remove carrier to check air cleaner and add oil when changing. I thought I read 22" carrier to floor. I only have 18.5"

I double stack a pair of funnels to fill my oil and it's accessible from the driver's side, any spare carrier wouldn't get in the way. You can just see the edge of the TSC box on the right, the green funnel is leaning against it. I even had to flatten the galvanized funnel a bit to get it in there. Be careful, oil flow can't keep up with how fast I can add oil, the light lets me see when it starts to back up.

Once snorkeled, you'll rarely have to open the stock airbox so that's a moot point - I'm pretty sure you're running a snorkel.

Yes, I did the mod to my intake. I have a Uni and later added a large fabric prefilter over that. I flick dust off of it whenever I stop if it is real dusty. Very little dust on the inner filter when I do check it. I inverted the Uni thinking I wouldn't want water sitting on top of it if raining.

I didn't check to see if I can get the outer air filter cover off without removing my TSC trunk. And I'm not sure I can remove the trunk without removing the spare carrier. The oil really isn't a problem. I have large plastic tubing that will reach down there with a funnel on the top. And I know how much oil it takes to fill. Slow down when near full. I also thought about adding oil where the dip stick level is checked. Before buying the carrier, I read the clearance to the bed was 22". Mine is 18 1/2". Maybe I saw that on a different Tusk carrier.
