i4wd light is staying on and it won’t shift out of 1st gear. Doesn’t matter if I’m in auto or manual. Stuck in first gear. Help!

I would be looking at the speed sensors on the differentials.

Is the speed working on the display?
There are several speed sensors here and there.
If the machine can not read the speed it will not shift out of 1st gear.

If you have a newer unit, the speed sensors have moved. I don't know to where currently.

Thank you Neohio. Battery is over 13 v. This is an early model 2016. Speed is displaying correctly.

update: just found the red connector under the seat had come apart. Plugged it back in and still have same problem. I’m assuming I have to clear a code first?

You need to jump 2 wires on the red connector to flash the codes on the dash. I don't recall which 2 off the top of my head.
It can't be a 16. The LE models were not introduced until 2017 model year

Be careful about voltage only and assuming the battery is ok. It really should be load tested. You can have a battery that reads good voltage at rest, but have no working amps capacity.

I don’t know enough about the I4wd models if the low battery capacity affects it….but when the battery got weak on my base model it did exactly the same thing for shifting, but the power steering was cut and the power steering light stayed on. To trouble shoot my battery I put a known good lawn mower battery in the bed and connected a set of jumper cables to the buggy battery…which solved my problems immediately.

If it still has its original battery….bravo, but it’s likely on its way out or will be soon.

Anyone know how to jumper the 2 wires in the red plug? I tried per the only Utube video but it was for a Talon.

You can truly know this by (very important to the diag and schematics) looking at and better yet, taking a pic and posting it if your having issues understanding it, of the data plate sticker on the ROPS. It has the build date model and i believe the vin. Basically what u look at to give your insurance and dealer for warranty work. Like when /if u did the clutch update campaign.

Any honda sxs or atv will have the same plug. If the video showed a talon with the 2x2(4 pin) red plug, those are the wires you need to jump.
Then turn ignition on, film the flashes, upload to YouTube, share the link here and we can help diagnose it.

The light will not go out until the failure is fixed.

Well that’s the problem! How do I know what the failure is?
When you jump the wires and turn the ignition on, the i4wd light will blink, counting the blinks will tell you the code.

My i4wd light never blinks. Stays on steady as soon as the key is turned on.
