Hey y’all, I’m having some trouble with my Talon, and hoping someone here might have some insight. Every gear is slipping—not just Low and Reverse, which I know are common issues. No trouble codes, but when I put it in any gear and hit the gas, it barely creeps forward before violently grinding. Doesn’t matter if it’s High, Low, or any gear from 1-5. I cant seem to find one person that has had this exact problem which seems odd.

I’m thinking the sub-transmission might be toast, but before I tear into it, has anyone else experienced this? Appreciate any input!

Ah man my anxiety lol I would like to add that "low" is much less likely to grind than reverse and high. Low you got to be on the throttle quite a bit. Also this happened all of a sudden not over time.

I'll kinda guess at this, I've never been 'inside' my Talon. That it happened suddenly is a bit weird - did you let some 'kids' take it for a ride when you weren't there?

Anyway, I think you're looking at damaged shift dogs 'somewhere', again, I'm not mechanically familiar with SxSs (and hope to never get there) -

Sounds like maybe the mainshaft has broken, like our race car.

I've only seen one customer unit do this.

Does it hold reverse ok?

nope just going up my logging trail and it just happened suddenly. I have kept up with maintenance intervals per manufacturer instructions. Only thing I can think is maybe the portals I've added has made extra strain on it but from my understanding with the gear reduction it should theoretically take strain away?

See I was looking into that aswell but It still moving while in Low gear makes this not possible correct?

reverse and high are completely gone as far as I can tell, slightest bit of throttle and you start grinding, low is the only one that is partially working but still medium amounts of throttle will cause the grinding

Pull the subtrans, inspect for broken parts and repair. Really isn't a horrible job.

I agree with you I seen a few people pull there's via YT and it doesn't look all that horrible but with this being kind of a weird issue I want to make sure I'm forsure that the sub is actually the issue, in other forums some are saying possibly clutches because it's happening to high gear?

Clutches won't cause grinding, just no movement.

You can only hope it's in the subtrans, easy enough to R&R. You do NOT want it in the transmission proper, which is inside the engine cases.

Im going to approach this from the opposite direction as they other doom sayers on here. Its a motorcycle transmission with a dual clutch system. Its no enigma machine. Its actually really easy to work on if you know your way around a wrench. Ive had my motor out of my talon twice (too much boost) and its really not a hard task. I can have an engine out in about 4 hours from running to pulled. With that said im almost sure its the subtrans. Likely it wasnt all the way in gear and slipped out. Smashing the dogs together and leaving that dreaded flattened spot. If you pull the subtrans you dont need to remove the motor. Its kind of a pain but it can be removed from the bottom of the car. After that its a simple mechanism. Pull the parts that look worn and put it all back together. You bought a Honda because Hondas are easy to work on. These machines are cake to work on compared to a Can-Am or Polaris. Save yourself the money and take it apart. You will be amazed what you learn. Heres some pictures for motivation.
