I am new to group riding, so not familiar with communication equipment used, and is it needed. I can get radio equipment, but probably not Ham license, in time for trip. I can listen on ham bands, if that will help me know what everyone is doing. Or CB radio, I can comminucate with others.
Just let me know if I should use something On the trails.

There’s a pretty good conversation on this beginning about halfway through page 3. Most people on most rides do not have communication equipment, so if you don’t get anything going, you’ll still be ok.

I have a HAM radio on the way. After the discussion, I'm taking the chance and going to be an outlaw!

I reserved as things may work out as I will be camping wherever I can find room! I need nothing for myself, primitive works for me.
My old college room mate and I are staying in no cost (free) campground 3 miles from town on FR585 (Forest Road). He tells me there are several campgrounds along the road. Look up Silverton on google maps and you can see them.

There are also several on the county road leading from Silverton up toward Animas Forks, which would be along the trail route we will traverse daily to access the southern side of the trail system. Where you will be will require trailering or hauling back into town as 550 is licensed vehicles only.

Is Animas forks in the river, or where that old ghost town is?

Animas Forks is both the old mill and townsite where several old buildings have been restored. Animas River starts up at the forks and passes by Silverton and continues down to Durango and on. Cement Creek comes from Gladstone and feeds into Animas River in Silverton. It is what the mine spill came down several years ago.
