Has anyone reinforced the stock tailgate and cables in order for it to handle more weight? I'm not a small guy by any means and the one time i attempted to sit on my tailgate I could feel it deflecting quite a bit.

My thoughts were to slip a piece of angle or similar inside of the gate and bolt to the cables to stiffen it up. Has anyone done anything similar or have any ideas? Would the cables need to be upgraded as well? Thanks!

Haven't ever modified a stock one but a steel one isn't very hard to make.

How much do you weigh?

Looks good, I may try something like that for myself.
Holler if I can help in any way. I used 1" square tubing. Corners are gusseted. Built like a tank.

I really like the design of yours, was even thinking about adding something like the Seizmik extender to your design by adding an additional gate that folds down.

I put a double layer of 3/4" plywood on mine and its sturdy, but it's pretty heavy. I stand on the tailgate to fill deer feeders. When I find the time, I'll probably put 1/8" or 3/16" plate on it instead and add some provisions for a bed extender.

That's the beauty of metal tailgate. Adding anything you want is super easy and sturdy. Grab some .095 one inch tubing. It works perfectly for pivot point.

I hauled Santa and Mrs. Claus around the neighborhood. They were both average size adults so probably over 300 pounds combined. It definitely deflects but I didn't have any issue with it deforming or anything. Definitely wouldn't jump up and down on it though!

I’m not real sure what he meant.. but @joeymt33 said he has first hand experience that it will handle a 350 lb black man getting pounded on it...

Strengthened ours up a bit when I decided to add storage. Snapped the cables a couple times but haven’t flexed the gate. Probably overkill without folding steel straps. Eventually I may look into those.
If you drilled holes in bottom of gate and sprayed expansion foam way up in there in stages so it’d dry it’ll work. I’ve done that with the doors and it makes them much stronger and solid shutting

Ok, now that is just real talent right there. I would love a step by step on this and what you used for materials.

Here’s what I did. It’s at the beginning of the thread. Like said though could easily use just foam and have a more solid gate bit only had a few hours into building this one.
