Looking at two pioneer 1000’s, one is a 1000-3 and the other is a 1000-5.

The 1000-3 is a 2017 limited edition with under 2000 miles. It’s definitely been worked but the miles aren’t bad but it is a little rough. What I do know is that the clutch upgrade hasn't been done and I’m wondering what that would run to have it done, worst case scenario. I have the VIN and ran it through a Honda dealership and they said they could try to do it and get it covered but I don’t have a lot of faith that would get done

The 1000-5 is a 2021 with under 1000 miles. Looks clean and I don’t think this year model had the clutch issues.

The price difference is about $5500 with the newer 1000-5 being the more expensive of the two

This would be my first pioneer and any input is appreciated

The 1000-5 offers a ton of cool features like extra seats, storage in the rear doors if modified, extra roof cover for a Milwaukee packout set, and better resale value.

I would recommend the 1000-5 based solely on mileage, cleanliness as you described, and the 21 has no clutch issues.

What @Robobrainiac said fo sho!
Also, on that 17’ you MUST make sure it has very good records on all the updates and make sure they have been done especially the clutch campaign update. If that wasn't done, give them some good facts from here and offer $2,500 less than asking price because of which, cuz thats what it will cost yoy to have a sealership do it.

And all that info on the updates are located in the search up top.
Has been regurgitated on here more times than a Kardashian

As you can see in the photo, I have a 3 seater and prefer this model. I bought it new from a dealer and could have chosen the 5 seater. My point is it's an individual choice. What do you prefer? Will family members ride with you?

You didn't disclose the prices but if the price of the 2021 1000-5 is in an affordable range of a new one I would buy a new one with a warranty and no history. Sometimes Talons and Pioneers are abused, service is neglected, loan payments are not made, and the unit is repossessed. Some may have been damaged or wrecked before they were repossessed.

I'm not saying all used ATVs are neglected or damaged but it may be hard to determine once it's detailed by a dealer. A service history showing dealer services performed would be helpful. A unit offered by an individual might be a good choice. You could talk with the seller and learn how he used it and why he is offering it for sale.

Some of the Talons and Pioneers have been submerged in deep water or mud and subjected to high speed jumps.

Do your due diligence and choose wisely.

I would recommend the 1000-5 based on mileage and the description you gave.

But. I agree with all the above. Sometimes the 3 seater is better if you don’t have a bunch of kids.

You didn’t post an actual price but have you looked at new? They are starting to have overstock issues near me.

The 1000-5 is listed at 15,500 and the 1000-3 is listed at 10,000

May go look at a new model. I think there’s room on the 1000-3, how much I just don’t know

I sure appreciate the responses!

Make offers. Start low and go up if need be.
10k aint bad for the 17’ just need more info about it.
Between the 3&5 depends on what you’re using it for and how many people

It would primarily be used hunting. My thoughts were the 1000-3 would work but the clutch issues in the 16’s and 17’s scare me a bit. The 1000-6 is intriguing as well but it’s just so damn long. They have those for sale at 19k locally

Easy on that long stuff! NoHomo😂

I use my 1000-5 for hunting as well and I will say that it can be a little bit of a pain in the ass getting game particularly large game in and out with the roll cage there but I do make do and it works works fine. 1000-3 would be a great choice for hunting for game and stuff like that with the ease of the back bed. I would not be scared at all about the older 16-17’s. I own a 16 since it was new had the clutch update done on it and all of the recalls and everything has been just fine and I worked the piss out of it. All you gotta do is just make sure you have all the records that things were done on it. If the seller is kind of you, he will give you the Vin number and you can call a dealership and they will gladly tell you all the things that have been done to ease your mind.

I have the vin and there were a couple recalls done on the 1000-3 but the clutch wasn’t done. One was a throttle body and I’ll have to look at my notes when I get home to see what else was done

If u get a chance to look at the rig, you can tell if the clutch update was truly done. Its also quite possible that it wasnt recorded being a campaign not a recall
See this pic below. Its easy to check and worth the time to look.

On a side note, it has very low milage which is good. Now if it hasnt been done, id present that to him. Then offer 8k for it and would be a great deal. Dive it till u have an issue or you may never have one. But thats what I would do.
Incidentally, do u have any pics of these rigs you can post up?

Almost got a 1000-3 before I got my 1000-5 in '21 (both new).

Main reasons for choosing the 1000-5: I like the covered rear bed and the *option* to have a couple folks back there IF the situation ever presents itself. It's also arguably safer with the full ROPS if you happen to experience a roll over.

If you're going to be spending a bunch of time throwing really BIG stuff in and out of the bed (e.g., deer), then the lack of rear ROPS on the 1000-3 could suit you better. Buy if that's only a once in a blue moon thing, I'd say the 5 seater would be the better overall option.
