After reading a lot here, we put a deposit on a red P520 and will need to make the 24 hour drive to pick it up soon. That’ll likely be the last time it sees a dealer as the closest is 10 hours away from its new home.

It’s replacing a Polaris 800 Big Boss 6x6 that was really useful, though the quality hasn’t impressed me.

We expect to use the P520 for the same stuff as the Polaris did, with the exception that we don’t plan to plow the driveway with it (getting a CTL for that). The 1 km driveway with steep hill on the last half with significant snow was a bit much for an ATV and walk behind blower, but you do what you have to!

What we plan to do with the P520:
  • Gather firewood from around mountainside property and steep trails. We really liked the long wheelbase of the 6x6 going up hills, and the P520’s is only a bit shorter
    B18FE7A2 C4DE 451D 85CA 3BDC0F4D07FA
  • Move people, tools, and stuff around
  • Occasional moose hunting trip
  • Probably tow a trailer for moving stuff as the box is on the small side—but CTL may take over some of this work. Terrain is hilly and steep. We’re hoping we don’t miss the 6x6 traction too much.

Accessory questions—besides a drawbar and hitch ball, we’re looking at the following:

1 - We want sturdy tires with good traction for loose rocky stuff and occasional mud as well as some snow. ITP Blackwater Evolutions worked well on the 6x6 so we’re considering swapping stock tires to these immediately. Is 26x9-12 front and 26x11-12 rear a good size for the P520 as a primarily utility vehicle on steep terrain, occasionally towing or hauling heavier loads? Would you recommend a different/smaller/larger tire?

2 - No garage for it, so we’re thinking maybe a hard top to hold up a tarp so it doesn’t sag and pool ice/snow in the top of the roll cage when covered in winter. Would the soft top be durable enough for this?

3 - Would Honda storage cover make a durable winter cover? Does it fit well enough to use it to keep it clean on a 1000 mile highway trip on the back of a pickup without getting shredded?

4 - Is the Warn 3500 lb winch package Honda sells a good fit, or would you recommend something else? Would you have Honda install it?

5 - Are the aluminum skid plates and A-arm guards from Honda the way to go, or is UHMW better? Where do you get the UHMW ones I’ve seen mentioned? How well protected are things without these?

6 - Honda wants a lot for their under hood and under seat storage boxes... is there a smarter way to get some good sealed storage, or do we pay the ransom?

7 - I can’t see wanting a windshield in most of our dry summer weather, but it would be nice in the occasional rain and probably really nice in occasional winter use. Would you recommend the Honda hard coat tilt up or something else? Maybe wait and decide later?

8 - EPS and torque lock: I think we’ll want to add these, but it’s hard to know how much we’ll want them till we’ve driven it around here. Don’t want to break the bank completely up front.

Please fire away with any thoughts, questions, and suggestions!

Forgot to add that the P520 will be our first SxS and the 6x6 was our first ATV. After having it, I don’t know how we got by without one!

Congrats on getting one.

1. Those size tires would probably be perfect for you. I'm not that familiar with Blackwaters, but if you liked them on the Polaris, I would imagine that you will like them on the p52.

2. Personally, I'd want a hardtop with the amount of snow it appears you get. I'd be afraid of stretching the soft top from the snow load. Honda makes a popular one, though I think it's hard to get right now. EMP makes both a poly and aluminum hard top as well.

3. No experience with these.

4. Warn makes good stuff, but Honda is really proud of that package. Personally, I opted for a more reasonable winch and installed it myself. Not overly difficult.

5. The consensus on this site seems to be UHMW > aluminum. The stock skids are pretty thin. I'm not sure I would trust them over a pointy rock. SSS skidplates makes UHMW stuff for these.

6. Both Honda and EMP make underhood storage. I think EMP offers both poly and aluminum versions. Hondas underseat storage is ridiculously expensive. Do a search on here; a lot of guys make their own with things as simple as a trashcan.

7. Again, Honda stuff is expensive. A lot of folks run the Super ATV full windshield that tilts up and out. There are also a few companies that make legit glass windshields as well. EMP, SxS Windshields, 801utv.

8. EPS is popular and is a nice addition. Torq Locker gets tons of praise around here. I have both but have yet to fully test either, so I can't quite vouche for them just yet.

Welcome from Alabama.

1. I am running blackwater evo's in 9x26-12 on 5+2 wheels on all 4 corners with no complaints, so I think your choice would be good, an accepted rule of thumb - If you go up in tire size go out in stance.
2. I have the aluminum EMP roof and like the low profile and rain gutters.
3. Sorry, I can't help with that one.
4. As @The Green Goat mentioned, Honda is pretty proud of that winch, I went with a Superwinch LT4000 ATV SR back in February 2017 it was $210USD on Amazon. Install is quite easy and several links on this forum to assist if needed.
5. After one outing with OEM skid plate getting pretty much destroyed, I got a 3 piece 3/8" UHMW center skids from an eBay seller and added Ricochet aluminum A-Arm guards and their rock sliders.
6. No room in my underhood area due to EPS, stereo amp, washer reservoir and pump, etc. I put my second battery under the seat, so that's out for me as well.
7. My first windshield was a Moose brand folding windshield (not hard coated) and it scratched badly. I have since replaced it with a sXswindshields glass which is nice having windshield wipers and a washer system.
8. You don't need EPS or a Torq Locker, and my first trip to Takeover I didn't have either, now I have both and like them.

Assuming the 520 is using a 1-1/4" receiver as is the case on the 500, for pulling a trailer you might want to consider a 2" receiver mount instead of the 1-1/4". The 2" ties into the rear frame and hitch mount is then above the 1-1/4", I also think it strengthens the rear end a bit. I have the MFG Supply 1195CMP but Moose makes on as well, I believe their P/N is 4504-0146.

Have fun and don't forget - Pictures :D

Thanks @The Green Goat and @DaddyDubbs!

1. I'll go with the 26" Blackwater Evo's then. Keeping them all the same width sounds convenient, though I suppose a spare in the narrower front size would work on the back in a pinch. I'll probably stick with wider on the back for more flotation when hauling/towing. And maybe I'll buy a spare up front. With only 4 wheels, losing one out on the trail wouldn't be any fun.

@DaddyDubbs, freshly educated by Rocky Mountain ATV (pic below) I understand 5+2 rims means you have 5" inside and 2" on the outside for 7" wide rims, which appears to be stock. When you say, "If you go up in tire size go out in stance," I take it you're referring to the tire width then, not any rim changes--at least for this size. Glad to hear the Blackwater Evo 26x9-12s are working well for you!
1622571465544

2. I like the look of the EMP aluminum hard top, but am thinking maybe poly would be better to reduce frozen tarp sticking to it in winter. I might just go with the Honda hard top.
1622572548706

3. I'll probably just let it get bug spattered on the way home--or maybe wrap it in stretch film. I've found it's difficult at best to get a tarp snug enough everywhere around an odd shaped hard object like this to avoid fluttering in the wind damaging what's under it and/or shredding the tarp.

4. I was surprised the dealer's price on the Warn winch was half of the (ridiculous) price on the Honda Canada website. I might go with it. Any thoughts on wire vs. poly rope? We had a Warn 3500s on the Polaris that worked well (replaced a burnt up Polaris 3500), but I haven't had any experience with wire rope on a winch. Also, is there any reason not to go with 3500 or 4500 lb Warn if not much difference in cost from 2500 lb?

5. @DaddyDubbs, by "OEM skid plate" are you referring to something that came stock with the machine, or the aluminum one Honda sells for it (Canadian MSRP below)?
1622573335675

I'll probably wait for a UHMW skid plate--not quickly seeing any for P520 yet, though maybe P500 ones will fit it. This does look nice:
1622575336719

I'm guessing it will require removal for oil changes.

For A-Arm guards, I like the idea of UHMW's flexibility/impact absorption, but it does look like the aluminum products might offer better protection than the very little vertical on the UHMW A-Arm guards.

Offhand it looks like Ricochet's may offer a little better protection, and their price certainly looks better even after the USD:CAD conversion. Not sure if the ricochet ones will fit the 520.
1622574948303

1622575163612

6. Sounds like a good idea to wait on overpriced storage boxes till other accessories are figured out and we see what room is left--and look at more economical alternatives.

7. I might wait on the windshield to see if we really want it and figure out which one.

8. EPS & Torque Locker: will wait and see / add later. I'm sure I'll like them, but probably won't need them, at least most of the time. Now watch me get stuck and wish I had them!

Thanks for the tip on receiver--I'd just assumed this was 2", looking at accessories Honda lists for the 520. I can't seem to find official specs for this anywhere--will ask dealer.

1. The main reason I went with all four tires the same size was to be able to rotate if I noticed too much wear on the front from cornering. by "going out in stance" refers to making the track wider, which can be achieved by a greater offset wheel and/or by the use of spacers between hub and wheel. While not an absolute hard and fast rule, this can help to lower the pucker factor of raising the center of gravity an a narrower track width.
2. I had to be aware of vertical clearance in my enclosed trailer so the Honda roof was not a viable option for me.
3.
4. Personally I like synthetic vs wire. When wire kinks or frays you can get quite a painful jab by the wire strands, however, I have heard some say they are concerned by rope possibly freezing in wet cold situations. Maybe @trigger will weigh in here as I think he is running synthetic rope on his P5 and he uses it to plow snow. Regarding winch size, bigger is always better IMO.
5. Yes the stock Original Equipment Manufacturer skid plate. First three photos are the stock skid plate after a weekend at Ride Royal Blue in Tennessee, you can see the amount of damage to the skids, the last photo is of the UHMW skid in center and the rocksliders on the outer sides.

6. Good idea, never know what you'll end up with up there.
7. One thing to consider when you are ready for a windshield. Plastic scratches, whereas with glass you can take a scraper and scrape the windshield both inside and out if needed.
8. Those can always be added depending on your needs.
Here is the MFG receiver mount (Moose is identical) and how it ties into the P5.

Yep, SSS Off-Road UHMW all around. Listening to Trigger and others who use their 500 as a bobsled made me investigate and choose. No denting as with aluminum, slides over obstructions without gauging. Few seams so won't trap debris, Oil change is an I don't know for now ... let you know. I think the slots pictured are specifically designed to drain oil.

I hadn't even thought of rotating as it wasn't an option with different front / rear tire sizes on the 6x6 (actually the same size and tires I'm looking at for the P520). Have you noticed any uneven wear? The tires I bought the 2009 6x6 (used) with wore out via age and cracked sidewalls and still had plenty of tread on them. I guess our terrain and driving style isn't too hard on tires.

Are you using spacers between hub and wheel on yours? I might consider adding those as long as it doesn't change the geometry and cause tire rub when turning. Kids managed to lay the 6x6 on it's side once at low speed. I was grateful the homebuilt 2' box sides where on so it couldn't roll right over. They're now a lot more careful, but adding a bit of sideways stability is never a bad thing when almost nothing we drive on is level.

Synthetic sounds good (all I've ever worked with). I did a lot of plowing with the 6x6 in all kids of conditions and never had an issue with freezing. It would wear out at the fairlead rollers now and then from going up and down in the same place lifting the plow, but that's an easy fix with synthetic--cut if off hook and tie a new knot.

Ouch, that OEM skid plate looks rough. I've asked dealer if they can source something like the SSS Offroad UHMW for the 520 and will otherwise wait till I can find it myself.

Yeah, glass windshield sounds like the way to go if/when we add one.

Dealer confirmed P520 stock receiver is 1.25" like the P500. Either they'll come up with a reasonable price on a 2" receiver, or I'll get an aftermarket one like you suggested. Thanks!

Speaking of kids, the older two starting driving the 6x6 in low on relatively flat area of driveway with relatively flat ground on either side at five years old years ago. Our third isn't quite there yet. Having to use pedals, I'm guessing she'll have to get a bit older and taller before she can drive the SxS! On the plus side, the older two can learn to drive with a steering wheel and pedals on it rather than in the truck.

Wow, this guy has a lot of questions. Welcome to the forum. Can give you my 2 cents.
Can't go wrong with the Blackwaters, great tires. If there was any negative to them it might be the weight.
I'd recommend the Honda hard top if height isn't an issue, have beat the hell out of mine and it's virtually indestructible.
Word is that the Honda cover fits great with no accessories. Looked into one early on and was told no sxs cover is towable, you'll tear it up eventually.
Warn makes a good winch but there are other good ones that are cheaper. Check out SuperWinch, KFI, Viper...wouldn't go smaller than 3500 lb for that machine. Would also recommend the synthetic over the cable. Hooking it up yourself is pretty easy and don't follow Honda's directions, they'll have you taking out your floorboards. Not necessary, just drop the skids.
UHMW is the way to go for skids. Lots of guys have went with the SSS brand, I went with UPI's only bc I already had aluminum Ricochet rock sliders installed.
I lean towards aluminum or steel for A arm guards, not that UHWM would break but I'm sure they'll bend with a good enough shot. CV's and axles are the most vulnerable parts on these machines so not the best place to be frugal.
I've always thought the Honda storage boxes were a joke. I guess they'd work in a pinch but with under hood accessories, EPS and such, kind of eliminates that. Have a second battery under the seat as well along with a jack, better use of the space IMO.
If I were doing it again I'd spring for the glass windshield. I only run a full shield about 4 months out of the year, plow season. Otherwise the Honda half shield gives you that open air feel and deflects some wind.
The locker is a must if you're going to do hard riding. When hanging by a thread on some of these trails why even risk it, I want all four chewing.
Well that's kind of a broad stroke, each of these accessories is a subject in itself and there's several threads on all them and more. A lot of us have been running this machine for yrs and have seen the good and the bad. Don't be afraid to ask a stupid question, I guarantee it's already been asked. We won't steer you wrong and will save you some grief.

Thanks!
So far I haven't noticed much tire wear, but I don't ride too much on pavement. With the 26" Blackwater's I am not using additional spacers, just the 5+2 wheel offset and haven't had too many pucker moments, that being said if I go up to 27's I will definitely add spacers.

Welcome from Georgia. Don’t know if the P520 is the same, but many have used a 3 gallon trash can for the hole under the driver. A little heat will soften it, like for making a depression if your brake line is under it. I put the seldom needed item in there. I like the Strongmade bumper as you can easily mount the winch on top. Power steering tops my list of best mods.

Thank you everyone for all the great feedback and suggestions. The P520 is nearing first service now, and we’re getting used to it. SXS definitely rides different than a 6x6 ATV, but for our typical use it seems like a good fit.

Fresh from dealer, stock except for the Blackwater Evolution tires mentioned above. Had a major hail storm with the biggest hail I’ve seen as I pulled out of dealer. Thankfully no damage (was worried there would be), though others in Calgary that day weren’t so lucky. Tied down for the 1000 mile trip home. Kept the 10,000 lb straps low so they didn’t compress suspension much, but kept it fairly well centered on the rougher roads closer to home. Tying down wheels would be better.

Added Honda hard top. Definitely a nice addition for sun and keeping some rain off the seat.

Cleaning up some wood. It won’t haul as much as the Polaris 800 6x6, but carries a respectable load and gears are great for smooth control on hills.

We still need to install the Warn 4500 lb synthetic rope winch. It probably won’t get a lot of use as we’re not planning to put a plow on it, but we did find the winch very handy for occasional jobs with the old 6x6 ATV. Is a second battery something we should consider adding?
