I ran across these DG Tailgate Supports while on Cabelas for $55.

Tailgate Supports | Tailgate Support | Pickup Truck, ATV, UTV | DG Manufacturing

They offer two lengths of flat metal that latch onto your truck bed and tailgate that take the weight of your SXS on the tailgate and removes the load from the tailgate cables. they even offer a shorter set that holds the tailgate partially open so a bumper pull trailer can be used if you are just an inch or three too long from closing the tailgate. Looks like a simple and relatively inexpensive solution not to mention insurance of not damaging your tailgate or losing your SXS on the freeway from a failed tailgate cable.

I ordered a installed a set of these so I didn't have to worry about the weight on my tailgate cables. even though I have a 98" bed (8'2") I also have an 80 gallon in bed fuel tank bolted in. With these the P500 just fits with a few inches to spare. The 26" tires hit the fuel tank before the bumper by 1/2" so I just push up on it and set the brake before strapping it in.

The tailgate supports are made out of 3/16" strap metal notched for the bed post on one end and a welded in pin for the tailgate latch both literally pop right in and out in a few seconds.

Here is a few pics.

I might add these seem to be very well built, and for the price is cheap insurance to keep in your truck if you ever needed to haul anything heavy and oversized the sits back over your tailgate.

Considering I had a cable break unloading a 4 wheeler once, didn't fall and replaced both cables next day. This is a good idea.

Thanks I'm about to get a pair for the extra support. I read that they don't specify transporting but just for use loading and unloading. Is that right?

They lock in pretty sold and are made of substantial steel transporting with them on is fine. Its just the most stress is placed on the tailgate while loading is the point they are trying to make.

Imagine a tailgate cables fail as you just get the front wheels in the the loading ramp falls away damage to truck and SXS could get costly.

IT should fit in a 6.5' short bed, mine pictured above is in an 8 ft bed with a 110 gal tank in the front that take sup 32 inches of my 98 inch bed, that's only 5.5' as pictured above, it fits barely but it fits.

That only holds true if your truck is a 'fleetside' style. Mine's a step-side, i.e. 48" wall-to-wall, 6'9" long. So, I'm going to be in the market for a 6'x12' trailer. ...and no, I wouldn't be interested in just trading off my old Chevy step-side pickup :)

I can, and did, use my 4' x 8' motorcycle trailer to get it home, but both wheels had to sit up on the raised outside frame rails; precarious to say the least. But a little 6'x12' trailer doesn't cost all that much, as least that is, compared to the fun-machine payload.
