The 2021 Rimrocker Round Trip Overland Trek

Made it in to Moab a bit ago. Going to stay at the Inca Inn, where I’ve got 10 rooms blocked out for the trail ride later this year. Just want to check it out. The rooms are recently remodeled all the way through and clean, but simple, motor court era lodging. We can party on the long porches and grill in our hibachi grills...😂😂😂

So we traveled from Moab Utah to Montrose Colorado over one of the prettiest roads I’ve traveled, and I’ve traveled the back roads of 42 of the lower 48. This on a road that roughly parallels the Rimrocker trail.

As I mentioned earlier, I could not discuss the matter of UTV compliance with the Moab police as I had wanted to. The doors on the police station were locked and they’re not opening them due to Covid...And , there was no answer on the non emergency line we called...😳 Also, I thought it was odd that there were no police cars outside the station, and for driving around the town for 4 hours, we never saw a Moab police car...🤔

I asked people in town why that was and most just thought it was due to an insufficient budget for the department.

I stopped in to two SXS rental facilities and had a couple of good conversations with them about street legal rules and enforcement. Both of them told me that if you have the required equipment and a license plate on your SXS, and you are obeying normal traffic laws you will not be stopped by police...

These two both insisted that it doesn’t matter that your drivers license and license plate don’t match, that the likelihood of being stopped to begin with is very low. But, that it’s important to have with you the registration papers from the issuing state too prove it’s legality IF stopped. They both pointed out that their rentals all have Utah license plates, and the drivers have driver’s licenses from all over. Not quite the same, but point taken....

One thing both stressed to me was in ones words, “please don’t come to Moab without the required equipment on your SXS including a license plate” !!!!! He said bad apples are threatening their business. They both told me that some people speed in residential neighborhoods at 2:00 in the morning and town residents are getting pissed. There is a petition circulating around town collecting signatures in an interest to ban SXS’s from the streets. No one knows how that ends, but there’s plenty of concern.

I have an idaho license plate on mine but I’ve got to locate my registration papers. And I need to contact the Idaho DMV for a 2021 sticker for it.

There is a back road (that the Rimrocker Trail dumps into) all the way through town to the Inca Inn. And there is a back road from there to a Moab riding trail system at Sand Flats recreation area east of Moab along the Colorado river with about 4-5 various trails all rated moderate to difficult. I drove out to the entrance, 10 minutes from the motel to have a look. There is a $5.00 fee per SXS per day. Shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance from the rooms, and there is a restaurant on the motel grounds.

As I mentioned earlier, the drive from Moab to Naturita Colorado is spectacular scenery, and very generally parallels the Rimrocker Trail, even so up to 20 miles distance at points. The Dalores river is quite beautiful. This is a shot of the Main Street in Naturita along SH 141. There is a small grocery store, fuel, hardware store, repair shop, etc. There is a road off of the Rimrocker Trail south a few miles to this town should anyone need anything unexpected. Otherwise, there’s fuel in Nucla Colorado, which the Rimrocker passes right through, and it’s the only fuel along the way...

Well, @Sacagawea will be going to the New Mexico DMV this week or next to see what’s involved there. I did Idaho via mail/email quite easily and for less than $30.00

I’d suggest exploring on line, and see what you come up with. You may recall that I posted an earlier link to the New Mexico office to do so.

At Montrose, we drove out west of town, about 6-8 miles to the staging area, where the pavement ends and the Rimrocker begins. Plenty of room to park our trucks and trailers. Here’s a pic of both....

I forget who posted that went to the site and had no problem registering their vehicle in New Mexico and already received the sticker........ my question is back to tags.... I don’t even know if New Mexico has tags for OHV......
and I prefer that someone else do all the research and spend all the time and money..... then let me know the easiest way to do it.......

We got a 2021 nonres on inline and got the sticker within a week in the mail.

When you say sticker are you talking about the NM nonres sticker? If so does it qualify as a license plate for the Utah streets? I am planning to get my Colorado and Utah ORV tags in July, but an still unsure about how to get a street license plate.
