The 2016 & under had a 55t 1st counter shaft gear vs 47t on 2017 & up, reverse was 48t changed to 43t. The idler shaft was not changed. Not a huge difference, most guys don't use 1st(L) anyways regardless of the year.

FWIW one of the guys that makes the gear reduction sets said that the gear teeth count changed but the teeth were a different size (And I think he mentioned the actual OD of the ring being very close to the original) also and he did not think it was much if any of an actual output change. I would love for someone to actually have the gear set side by side on a bench...tooth count changes things on an automotive differential, and that may be impacting some peoples perceptions here... but it may not impact the P5 as much as some think.

It's a pretty noticeable difference in first and reverse.
I'd hate to use the '15-'16 for plowing snow with that super low reverse. Takes forever to back up to make another pass.

Now if I was going to run 28" tires, then the '15-'16 gearing would be my choice.

I agree, my former 2015 had a low 1st/reverse. I do not remember my 2015, automatically downshifting when riding like my 2017; that is, when you are traveling along, even in manual mode say in 5th gear, then slow down to take a turn it automatically downshifts and for my unit, it selects the right gear pretty routinely, so you only have to upshift, basically....

The 15/16 models didn't have auto shift, on 17 & up even if you have it in manual mode it will downshift when the ECU thinks it's necessary. I changed the final drive gears in mine.....click the link in my signature below.... it made the P5 much more fun in the trails but 1st/Rev are still low enough for work/chores.

I want to see someone connect a tachometer and test two different year machines with the same tire size at the same speed in 1st gear.

2017 1st gear ratio 3.61 to 1, (47/13)
2016 1st gear ratio 4.23 to 1, (55/13)

That's a 15% change, so if a 2017 was able to go 5mph @ given RPM, a 2016 would go 4.25mph @ the same RPM. Likewise, reverse was changed 10.5% approx......

Gears are sorta my thing ;)

I have a 16 and it automatically downshifts when in manual mode. What I wish these things had was an overdrive.

Interesting..... my '16 does not auto downshift, I can come to a complete stop in 5th gear. Does your's have the MT/AT switch on the dash? That didn't come until the '17 model year, maybe yours was a late '16 build.

I can easily start from 2, even after my gear mod. It will start off in 3rd but I don't recommend it.

Well...it'll start off in 5th if you like working the clutch super hard.
2nd is good. Maybe 3rd on flat ground with stock dinky tires.
