This is incorrect.

The isolator doesn't push amps to anything. It does, depending on conditions and voltage of each battery, connect the two batteries so they can share a common charging source. Also, to a point, it will allow one battery to "assist" the other that is under load, but if it is the main helping with aux load, it will stop helping in order to prevent over discharging of the main bat.

The dual voltmeter requires a ground. It also would need a + battery connected to one of it's two inputs with some reasonable voltage - - it would then display that voltage. If another battery is connected it would display that voltage. So long as there's a ground applied, either battery will light its respective display.

Thus, if you know one or more batteries are good, and both the voltmeter displays are off, then you would suspect the ground is bad. Note that most installs have the ground applied by a relay that is powered by key-on positive voltage. If for some reason the display is completely blank, then and easy troubleshooting step is to use a scrap of wire and apply ground to that meter input terminal.

It was a generalization on the isolator.

What CID posted is the quick easy test. Nothing has to be taken apart or undone.

Determine which wire is the ground wire coming from the back of the voltmeter to the relay. Either ground this wire (as CID suggests) or run a separate ground wire to the terminal on the left side of the voltmeter. This is a gold colored spade terminal. (CID’s orange arrow in the pic) With a good ground, both volt displays should light up. If they don’t, the guage is bad. OR, you don’t have power coming from the 2 battery wires. (Easy to check)

If after you added the separate ground and both meters light up and display voltage, your relay is bad or wired up wrong.

If memory serves, on the back of your voltmeter there should be a gold spade for the ground, and 2 silver spades. One for each battery hot wire.

The above testing procedure is based on the assumption you have either physically traced each battery hot wire or checked them for power with a test meter.

Use caution when unplugging and checking the battery hot wires. Most likely not fused and will arc or weld themselves to any ground they come in contact with.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the ground wire going to the gold spade terminal on the back of the voltmeter got unplugged.

IMO, a nice and easy addition is a momentary normally open push button on the dash so that you can quickly and easily check the voltage of both batteries with no load applied to them. With ignition off, simply push and hold the momentary button in for a couple of seconds and the display shows "no-load" voltage for both batteries. This is allows a far more accurate assessment of battery condition than turning on the ignition key, as the main battery is immediately subjected to the current draw of all the vehicles computer stuff and display. Conveniently, it also provides instant troubleshooting info for the problem under discussion.

This switch is super easy to install, one lead of the button gets wired to ground - ground is available on pretty much all the backlit rocker switches as it's one side of the switch LED. The other side of the switch goes to the ground (gold) terminal on the back of the dual voltmeter.

This terminal also makes it an easy chore: Quick connect spade splice

You have to go to LubeTube (YouTube)
And load your vidgea then copy it from there and paste it on here.
