Has anyone had the opportunity to use a tusk spare tire carrier on the pioneer 1000-5?

I really want a bed extender with carrier but I haven't been able to justify the cost of one.

I didn't have anyone respond but I really liked the theory of this tire carrier so I made my purchase. It's basically just as the video shows. My only gripe is there is a bracket that connects between the rear of the frame and ROPs. This bracket makes it more of a permanent thing rather than a quick solution which was a little disappointing. The most disappointing thing is that with the bracket installed you lose functionality of the dumping bed. That really irritated me. I think without the bracket the carrier is stout enough for my needs. I think if you were using a heavy wheel/tire combo the bracket would be beneficial for keeping everything secure. I like it so far and time will tell how well it works.

loss of dump bed and tail gate big no
Many of the spare tire carrier's are like that. With most of them you have to pull a large binding pin to swing it open for bed access. So this is no different in a sense. One of the only ways around it is get a spare tire rack that has the tailgate down all the time as an extender with the tire on the back of that. Now your long in the rear and possibly rear heavy. The other way is the tire mont in the bed. Now u loose bed space so pic your poison lol

Is it putting any wear and tear on the hitch tube without the bracket. The carrier look well built. Might want to use on a 700-4
I only keep the spare on when we trail ride off the property. We are typically not off the property very often. I have not noticed any wear on the tube of the hitch or the box end on the carrier itself.

I have this same tire carrier on my 1000-3. I really like everything about it except that bracket everyone is talking about. I have never really thought to just use the clamp in the hitch. I'm guessing that it should stay tight with just that as long as your not doing and crazy driving. I just don't like the fact that you cant raise the bed to check anything as far as oil....

No experience with this, but on a 2" receiver, bottom cradle type double bike rack, I eliminated all play by drilling a hole through one side of the receiver hitch, welding a large nut over the hole, then screw a bolt through the nut so the bolt clamps against the hitch device - - no more slop.

I went with this for all the points noted previously.

I only take it when on long trips at planned destinations, it mounts fast and can be moved to more than one location. Works well with my homemade extender too. Still allows the bed to dump if necessary…but I hardly use this option.

Will your spare fit without suspension mods?

Not sure I follow…I use a steelie base front tire that’s about as light as it gets for COG thinking. Otherwise stock suspension….

With the full fam along I don’t go crazy trail riding as usually P1k5 is also carrying a cooler plus a milk crate of tools etc plus some fuel and all five of the Fam. IE we aren’t planning on steep rock climbing and stuff more like logging trails and some moderate stuff.

The cool thing about the carrier is that you can mount it about 6 different ways depending on your plans.

I have this same Tusk carrier and I found another way. I bought an 8" extender. It has a top bolt and a hitch clamp to stop movement. Works great.

Looks like that did the trick to get the tailgate down. Now you need to do the tailgate mod.

when your tailgate is up, how far is the tire now away from the bed?

With the extender, about 14". Without the extender it's about 3".
I don't use the metal bracket that bolts to the roll cage. It seems solid and stable without it.

I do need to get the extension cables for the tailgate.
