Just because you do a valve clearance adjustment doesn't mean they are out of spec. For alot of us that have done it , is for piece of mind !!
I am willing to bet that the majority that have checked there clearance , found that it was in spec !!!

When I did mine , the machine gave me no indication they needed adjusted , it was running just fine and no noise. I checked them because I don't trust these bone heads they have assembly these engines and machines !!!

Like @Chooglin said, no reason for concern. I'm sure that Yamaha, Kawi, Suzuki, Canam, etc all recommend to periodically check valve clearances. It's just the nature of a small engine. If you don't want to deal with occasional valve adjustments, the old Polaris 700 and 800 engines have hydraulic lifters... My Night Rod Special is supposed to have the valves checked at 15,000 miles - and that is WAYYYY more of a big deal than a little Honda single cylinder.

Yeah I hear ya. I wouldn't want to get stranded out there. At some point I would definitely get them checked, just for peace of mind.

Even if the valves need adjusted, it wouldn't just die all of a sudden. You would probably have symptoms like hard starting and maybe a rough idle. Most likely it would still run quite a while.

It is no big deal at all. Lots of machines recommend checking certain things at early intervals but it does not mean there is a problem. (Tractors often have checks at 50 hrs for the hydro system, etc - that is in the first week in the case of a farm) Motors change while breaking in and it is just a simple job that makes sure everything stays in spec.
As Ehart814 mentioned unless it throws a valve, they are not something that are going to cause you a problem or be a big deal. Break a belt = start pushing, slice a tire (no spare) = start walking, lots of things can be an issue but with proper maintenance most are avoided.
Ride it and enjoy it!

For instance, I adjusted my valves at around 2800 miles for the first time. Ran fine before adjustment, ran better after....but always ran.
