Weird RPM Fluctuation if I have my foot on the brake when starting.

A couple years ago I accidentally found out you could start my P1 in any gear as long as you had your foot on the brake, It started freaking out and would go from normal idle to 1500 RPM in rapid succession and the engine light would come on, so I quit doing that. This last weekend on a ride I had it in park and had my foot on the brake and it did it again, took my foot of the brake, back to normal?
