You've stated that it loses power but you haven't said when? Often? Seldom? Under acceleration or just driving along.

As far as water in the gas goes.....it would just die before there was enough to cause smoke.

Can you post videos?

So I’ve opened up the head and the piston looks pretty good. My fingernail does catch on a few spots on the piston tube(don’t know what to call it). What is surprising is there is a ton of buildup on the valves. Would oil coming past the piston cause that? Picture attached.

If your finger nail is catching on cylinder wall that's a problem
.if scoring is bad will let oil past the oil rings, need to remove jug And have it ck out .post a couple pics of cylinder walls.

Yeah, I think the next step will be to remove it and order a replacement piston and jug kit. Is there an easy way to tell of the valves are bad? Wondering if there is oil coming in from that direction too.

Did you get water in it? If so you probably washed rings.

No, time to read whole thread at work.

By the pic the valves look ok but I would change valve seals while I had it off a $20 valve spring tool makes them easy

While it is apart check the cam/cam lobes. There were a handful of 700's that ate their cams on here for a bit.

Not sure as I bought it used a few months back. What’s surprising is that it wasn’t smoking when I test drove it. Not sure how the guy covered that up. Lol.
The gaskets all look good which is surprising. I expected to have to scrape them off. I’m betting someone has been in there before and replaced the gaskets but didn’t install the rings properly.

Can you check how much cylinder wear you have on it. Check in middle of cylinder, not necessarily at top?
Yes, is there a way to loosen the cam chain without the tool that they talk about in the service manual or do I need to order one of these?

If it still has an on again/off again loss of power after you put it all back together, check to make sure the baffle inside the muffler hasnt vibrated loose and is partially blocking the exhaust from coming out the tail pipe. The 700s are known for this. It happened to my wifes when she had a 700. I think the welds break inside the exhaust canister and it falls a little and blocks the exhaust path. If I remember right you can also take the 3 bolts out of the exhaust tip and pull a little screen out to clean maybe, cant remember. You also mash the gas with it running while you have the tip out a few times to blow crap out of the exhaust canister.

Well I got the piston and jug completely out and I have to say that it doesn’t look too bad. Not really sure how I’m burning so much oil at this point.

Ok, I think I have a gameplan. I am going to order a new piston and replace the valve stem seals and all the gaskets. Then pray like hell that the one of those was the problem.

What valve spring tool would you recommend?

Would this would work?
