P500 4wd not working

I discovered today, as I was getting ready to plow my drive way, that the 4 wd on my P500 does not work. The indicator light comes on when I move the 4wd lever into position, but clearly does not activate. I started and restarted several times. Tried reverse and forward... nothing. I also tried switching to 4 wd while going slow in 2nd gear; at this point I heard a slight whining/grinding noise in the front end. My guess is that this is not a good sign! Any thoughts?

Hopefully just a cable adjustment. Not familiar with the P500 but that's how some shifters work.

The 4wd actuation is just an arm that engages the lock.

Sometimes mud and debris gets wedged inside the plastic cover and it can't move. Cleaning under that cover usually fixes the issue.
