Hi, my name is Jason. I'm struggling with a decision on whether or not to buy a 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 with about 2500 miles for around $12,000 or a 2022 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 Trail edition with 3,500 miles for $15,000. I'm torn because the older model has a locking front differential and that seems more reliable than the i4wd but I have no experience so I'm not sure. Both seem to be in decent shape. The 2016 is a 2 owner private sale and the 2022 is a one owner being sold by a dealer. I would really appreciate some advice. Below is a picture of the 2022, I don't have a picture of the other one. Thanks!

depends on what you use it for - both 4 corner drives work great - if u need a full locker for where u r going - get the older one

iMO - the newer one will have more residual value in a couple of years as the 16 is almost a decade old - was the clutch cover update done on the old one, etc….

there are literally 1000’s of machines with i4WD out there with very very little problems .

That 22 is a good looking machine. It has a windshield and the roof light, it looks like it may have fox shocks too. I'd pick that because of the new frame and a-arms design and no worry about the clutch update that was optional on the 2016s.

That's really helpful thanks! I'm mostly going to use it for land maintenance on some property in Green Mountain NC. Steep terrain, forest trails. Not too much high speed stuff. I just wasn't sure how reliable the i4wd is, seems like there is more to go wrong.

The 2022 definitely has a lot of extras: warn winch, windshield, fox shocks, roof with stereo built in (not important to me). The 2016 has a winch and a roof.

I have i4wd on the talon and diff lock on the pioneer. I4wd drives better for most uses with less steering input. If you have a tire off the ground the real 4 wheel drive will spin all 4 tires and i4wd wont. I don't think you'll find many use cases besides rock crawling or deep mud where i4wd isn't better or nicer to drive

You guys definitely helped me make my decision. It's in the works for the 2022 Trail Edition. I noticed that I could hear & feel it shift, is that normal 'for Hondas? From some of the stuff I've read it's typical. The dealer said it was normal and I noticed it on another used Pioneer they had for sale.

Normal. It’s an electronically controlled clutch but otherwise a sequential manual transmission.
