@Adam490 Hey what is a good 540 brushed motor for a crawler ?
I think all the brushed guys swear by these Holmes Hobby motors. I've never driven anything other than the stock Axial brushed motor in the crawlers before switching to brushless, so I don't have much experience with any of them.

Called Horizon and talked to a warranty rep that knew about RC, told him the whole story, he said you have a bad motor, what's your address, we will be sending you a replacement motor, outstanding! Sure beats the heck outa boxing it up and shipping it. Thanks @Adam490 and the rest of you guys for your help. Think this is going to be bad A! Track width is 11 inches and tread length is 17 3/8 and 9 1/4 tall, I can still roll it though! HA! The tires need holes to make them softer. Got a back up until the motor comes in, the Temper ECX, It's a fast little Rock Crawler!
Good to hear! Glad they took care of you

Thanks, I was surprised how easy it was. I did take apart the rear diff, due to me not being able to spin the tires and turn the motor, every thing was fine. The extensions you pointed out to me work great, a little wider would be better in extreme circumstances, but I'm 11 inches now. So these rail trucks like we've got , how do they get rated in competition for divisions?

If you want to stick with a brushed motor setup, these are pretty much the gold standard for affordable/reliable ESC for crawlers. You could be in a new motor and ESC for less than the cost of a stock replacement:

540 35T motor:

If you want to bite the bullet and go brushless, I'd recommend one of these Fusion FOC systems like I've been running. More expensive for sure than sticking with a brushed setup:

I'm so new to all this, I don't know what I need. Like I've said I've watched a lot of videos of rock crawling and I must be extreme because there is little time in-between the rocks and flat ground, I have either got a bad motor or have burned it up in a matter of weeks, think I need industrial strength here?

Those stock sealed can motors either last forever or fail pretty quick. I think yours was a dud from the get go if you were only getting 15-20 minutes at a time. I doubt you are doing anything more extreme than I am to kill it that fast.

There are sealed can motors like what you have in yours, and an "open" can. Sealed can motors are simpler and cheaper but not easily serviceable. Most usually have bushings instead of bearings and fixed brushes. There are some quality 550 motors that are this style, but most are basically throw away.

This is an "open" can with an end bell that you can access the brushes, springs, and easily service it. In a crawler you typically want a higher turn motor since they generally produce more torque; lower turn motor for more speed.

Just remember these little trucks are just like your big toys; more power and speed will lead to something else going out that you'll then have to beef up :).

Would brushless be better for crawling ?
If you're just fiddling around in the yard the stock brushed setup in the RTR trucks will do just fine. If you're like me and can't leave anything alone, or your stock electronics crap out on you, brushless is the way to go. As long as you pick up one of the newer brushless systems that are designed for the crawlers. They sucked when there were only sensorless setups available because they had terrible low speed control (they'd cog and hesitate which led to a lot of heat build up and eventually failure). The sensored setups and newer FOC (field oriented control) systems are awesome. The Hobbywing Fusion FOC systems I have been running are the best I have ever used. Castle has a Mamba with FOC as well I believe but I'm not sure on the model or name of it (Slate maybe?).

Lower Kv brushless motors are a lot torquier than the higher Kv motors.

Was up until 2 last night finishing up the Enduro

Transmission going together. Went with the 11.83% front overdrive. I've got the 6% in the Gatekeeper and it's good. Easy to change if it's too much.

Axles, shocks, and transmission all buttoned up

Got everything lined up, so I'm going to start adding all the bits and pieces to the Trailrunner body today.

Getting there. Think I may make this one a 1.55 rig so I'm trying to decide on wheels and tires...again.
Been looking at the prices of brushless motors and up grades, think I will change gears and put a servo on the Losi, smooth out the throttle response on the Temper and save my money for a build with all the trick components instead of trying to make a P1 into a KRX. Now I need to start looking for a trick rail builders kit. May be a rail w/ 1/10 scale body with the crazy articulation?
